The Argentine Foreign Ministry announced the proposal made to the government of the United Kingdom - in an initiative “prepared and agreed upon” by the National Council for Affairs Relating to the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands and the corresponding maritime and island areas -, to carry out two “humanitarian flights” with Aerolíneas Argentinas in December and January from the Argentine mainland to Malvinas, to transport “residents” who need to travel to other destinations for personal or family reasons.
The Argentine offer is the insistence of a “seductive” style strategy that was coined and executed without any results by the government led by Carlos Menem in the de-malvinizing decade of the '90s, and occurs as a result of the interruption since March 2020 of the commercial flights of the Chilean airline company, a direct competitor of Aerolíneas Argentinas, as a result of the restrictions due to the pandemic.
In the press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recognizes by announcing that the initiative seeks to “stimulate a context of greater trust with the inhabitants (sic) of the Islands, within the framework of what is established by the National Constitution in the Provision Transitory First regarding respect for their way of life.”
