“The Malvinas are Europe”: the new pan-European trend incorporates the Malvinas into its discourse

The statement “The Malvinas are Europe”—disseminated on Instagram by Ave Europa—does not originate from a European Union institution or the British government, but from a recently created pan-European political movement that defines itself as federalist, pro-European, and situated between the center-right and the right. In the publication, Ave Europa argues that the inhabitants of the islands of British origin and their descendants did not cease to be European upon settling in the archipelago and concludes that it was they who “made” the Malvinas part of Europe; it also affirms that the islands will continue to be British territory regardless of the intentions of Donald Trump or Javier Milei. This statement must be understood within the framework of the movement's own Charter : there, Ave Europa maintains that identity and “European civilizational continuity” are central elements of its project and proposes transforming the current European Union into a federation capable of acting as an autonomous political, industrial, and military power. Furthermore, its reach is not limited to Instagram. The organization maintains the institutional website Ave Europa , the account @AveEuropae on X , which in September 2026 had around 12,000 followers, an institutional page and national chapters on LinkedIn , in addition to its doctrinal space Ave Atrium and various national accounts . The Parliament Magazine , a publication specializing in EU politics, described Ave Europa in March 2026 as part of the emergence of a new pro-European right and noted that it then declared more than 700 members and a think tank of about 60 people , with a presence in Germany, Denmark and France and the aspiration to compete first in local elections and later in European elections.

Behind the movement lies an identifiable and legally constituted structure. According to its own statutes , the international organization operates through Ave Europa International , a non-profit association registered in Denmark as the legal vehicle of the pan-European federalist movement and responsible, among other functions, for managing its central funds, coordinating activities, and managing its institutional identity. Danish business records based on the CVR/Virk confirm that Ave Europa International was registered on July 30, 2025 , with CVR number 45776867 , its registered office in Bække, and Jan Olsen as its legal representative. The organization itself identifies the following as its key personnel: Vilius Kasatkinas , founder and head of national chapters; Jan Olsen, head of strategy; Andrea Baruffini , co-founder and head of finance; Daniel Silva , head of marketing; Fred van Schaik , head of fundraising; Sven van Kooten , head of legal and human resources; and Jovan Jovanovic , head of public relations. Furthermore, there is a specifically British structure: Companies House , the UK's official business registry, confirms that Ave Europa UK Ltd was incorporated in London on December 19, 2025, as a company limited by guarantee, with no share capital, and registered to carry out "political organization activities." Its director and person with significant control is Nicholas David Reiners , a British citizen residing in Belgium, who holds at least 75% of the voting rights and the power to appoint or remove directors. Financially, Ave Europa maintains that it is funded through private contributions: its official donation page identifies Ave Europa International as the recipient, displays numerous, generally small, individual contributions, and accepts payments via Stripe, Wise, and bank transfer. In an interview published by Eurolandpost , representatives of the movement stated that until early 2026, funding came "100%" from donations from its own members, without institutional backing, and that some leaders had invested personal savings. However, this claim cannot be fully verified independently : the Danish registry indicates that, due to its voluntary association structure, it is not subject to the ordinary obligation to publish accounts, and so far no documentation has been found that would allow for the identification of all its income. Nor does the examined sources reveal any evidence of funding from the British Government, the Malvina Islands Government , or European Union bodies.

The slogan “The Malvinas are Europe” therefore has a fundamentally ideological and geopolitical meaning and does not describe the archipelago's current legal status with respect to the European Union . This distinction is especially important after Brexit. While the United Kingdom was a member of the EU, Annex II of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union , officially published in EUR-Lex , expressly included the “Malvina Islands,” along with “South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands” and other British territories, among the Overseas Countries and Territories associated with the Union ; this did not make the islands part of the EU territory or a member state, but it did confer upon them a special regime derived from their connection with the United Kingdom. That relationship ended as a consequence of the British withdrawal: the UK government itself announced on December 30, 2020, that the European Commission had rejected including the British Overseas Territories in the future trade relationship between London and Brussels and expressly stated that Malvina Islands fish exports would begin to face new European tariffs, including a 6% tariff on certain squid. Consequently, as of January 1, 2021 , the Malvina Islands ceased to participate in the European Association System, which it had enjoyed through the United Kingdom. This is precisely where the political significance of Ave Europa's message lies: the movement deliberately separates "Europe" from "European Union" and considers the United Kingdom part of a historical and civilizational European community despite Brexit. Its own Charter maintains that continental unity must become an instrument of sovereignty vis-à-vis the United States, Russia, and China, and even recalls the 1956 Suez Crisis as a symbol of the loss of British and French strategic autonomy. Seen in that context, the publication on the Malvinas does not express a new official European position nor does it demonstrate coordination with London: it represents the attempt by an emerging movement of the federalist right to reframe an Argentine-British controversy as a matter of European strategic and civilizational solidarity , a narrative whose future importance will depend on whether it manages to transcend its social networks and enter parties, parliaments or institutions with effective decision-making capacity.
