Four trillion pesos have reportedly disappeared from the National Treasury accounts.

An investigation by La Política Online exposed the lack of transparency in the national Treasury's accounts after the whereabouts of four trillion pesos raised in debt auctions and abrupt changes in dollar deposits became unknown. Faced with Luis Caputo's lack of clarity, the head of the Central Bank, Santiago Bausili, attempted to downplay the situation with an ironic remark that only raised more concerns: "I'm sure that if we look carefully, they're somewhere."

Financial consultancies 1816, Outlier and economist Gabriel Caamaño, detected that almost 4 trillion pesos ($4,000,000,000,000) collected by the State were not listed in the Treasury deposits within the balance sheet of the Central Bank.

The economic policies of the "Freedom Advances" movement have taken another sobering turn, this time at the heart of the financial system. According to the online news site La Política Online (LPO) , the Treasury's accounts at the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) have become a veritable "black box," with hundreds of millions of dollars and trillions of pesos flowing in and out without clear public accountability or credible official explanations.

The biggest controversy erupted after the government's latest debt auction, when private financial consultancies — such as 1816 , Outlier and economist Gabriel Caamaño — detected that almost 4 trillion pesos ($4,000,000,000,000) raised by the State were not listed in the Treasury deposits within the Central Bank's balance sheet.

Bausili's ironic response to the billions that "don't appear"

When asked at a press conference about the fate of this monumental mass of resources that should have been safeguarded by the monetary authority, the president of the BCRA, Santiago Bausili , preferred to distance himself from the responsibility of the economic portfolio led by Luis Caputo.

"I don't have much of an answer, because it's a question that should be directed to the Treasury," Bausili said, distancing himself from the matter. He then added a remark with an unusual degree of irony for someone in his position: "I don't think they've disappeared. Perhaps I didn't bring them here. I'm sure that if we look carefully, they're somewhere. There are quite a few of them; it's not like we can't find them."

Market operators speculate that the Economy Ministry may have temporarily diverted those funds to commercial banks or used Repo operations at its discretion to manage liquidity and contain the rise in rates, altering the official balance sheets of the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) without regulatory transparency.

Covert interventions and the wholesale dollar gap

Adding to the opacity of the peso is a striking maneuver with foreign currency reserves. Between July 28 and 29, Treasury dollar deposits fell from USD 3.33 billion to USD 3.185 billion (USD 145 million less), precisely on the same day that the wholesale dollar threatened to break the $1,500 ceiling.

Several foreign exchange market analysts suspect that the Ministry of Economy used Treasury dollars to intervene and suppress the exchange rate without recording the transaction as a direct sale by the Central Bank. Days later, the dollar balance registered inexplicable jumps of almost USD 800 million in a single weekend—reaching USD 4.387 billion—without the Ministry of Economy being able to specify what percentage corresponded to the placement of the Bonar 2029 (AO29), to disbursements from international organizations, or to Bopreales .

Improvisation at the heart of the model

The haphazard management of public accounts reveals the tension of a model that needs, simultaneously, to contain the dollar, drain pesos from circulation, and accumulate reserves to meet the demands of the IMF.

In a context where the Government hands over common natural resources, loosens borders, and seeks to align itself unconditionally with foreign powers under the promise of a supposed "financial order," the emergence of opaque maneuvers and the inability to explain where the Argentine people's funds are demonstrate that the economic policy is based on accounting patches and constant improvisation.
