The logic of the national government's real estate auction has fully arrived in the urban area of Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego. Through the publication of Decree 764/2026 in the Official Gazette, the administration of Javier Milei formally authorized the State Property Administration Agency (AABE) to proceed with the sale and future auction of a 38-hectare (382,594.79 m²) plot of land located in a key area of the city of Ushuaia.

The measure affects a key area bounded by Yaganes, Héroes ARA San Juan, Avenida Héroes de Malvinas, and Horeb streets, just meters from the provincial legislature building and other important public offices. This area, historically under the custody of the National State through the Argentine Navy, represents one of the last large green spaces and land reserves in the city center.

Unilateral decisions made behind the backs of the people of Tierra del Fuego

The national decree once again exemplifies Buenos Aires centralism at its most extreme. The sale of these 38 hectares was decided without any coordination, prior consultation, or consensus with the Municipality of Ushuaia or the Government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego.

Far from considering the urgent needs of the territory, the Casa Rosada resolved the alienation within a general package of auctions of public lands intended exclusively for tax collection, ignoring the reality of a city that faces serious geographical and structural limitations to provide basic services and guarantee access to land for its own inhabitants.

This land grab in Ushuaia demonstrates that the policy of dismantling national assets makes no distinction between the CNEA's uranium mines, the fields of the Andes Mountains, or the urban centers of Patagonian cities. For the official economic model, sovereignty, environmental preservation, and the needs of the people are meaningless: everything is reduced to an inventory to be sold off to the highest bidder.

The Ushuaia community and its representative institutions face the unavoidable challenge of halting this outrage. These 38 hectares must be preserved for public use, conservation, and the city's sovereign planning, and not handed over to the interests of a few private developers under the protection of a centralist decree.
