The Fuegian Legislature could meet every November 20 in Antarctica

The project to carry out a day of parliamentary activity on the white continent was presented by legislator Matías Lapadula. Argentina has 120 years of uninterrupted presence on the Antarctic continent, and “has the largest number of permanent and temporary bases.”

"Our country is the one with the largest number of permanent and temporary bases in this sector," said Lapadula.

The provincial legislator of the Green Party, Matías Lapadula, presented a bill that seeks for the Fuegian parliament to meet once a year in the Argentine Antarctic . To carry out this initiative, the official proposes establishing November 20, National Sovereignty Day , as a permanent date to hold an Ordinary Session of the Legislature of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands, in Antarctica Argentina.

Lapadula stated that "November 20 is a special date because it commemorates the day when we Argentines stood up against foreign powers that wanted to use and exploit our resources, that is what the battle of the Vuelta de Obligado meant."

Along these lines, the legislator highlighted that 2024 will mark 120 years of Argentina's uninterrupted presence on the Antarctic continent, taking into account that "our country is the one with the largest number of permanent and temporary bases in this sector."

“We have Provincial School No. 38, the only one on the white continent; and various scientific and technological research tasks are being carried out, which is a reflection of our commitment and dedication in this strategic region for our country and our province,” explained the parliamentarian.

He explained that “Antarctica represents an important part of the national identity and is considered a symbol of Argentine sovereignty in the region, contributing to the development of a highly trained scientific and technical community that promotes progress in various fields of knowledge that are beneficial to our country".
