Deputies from the Union for the Homeland party formally filed a request for impeachment against President Javier Milei , accusing him of issuing statements that violate current regulations and exacerbate international tensions.
In a press interview, Milei said that "Iran is an enemy of Argentina" and emphasized his unconditional support for Israel and the United States in the context of the worst escalation of war in the Middle East in recent years.
These words generated immediate reactions , given that they deviate from the stance of neutrality that Argentina should maintain internationally, especially to protect its people from unnecessary extracontinental conflicts.
UP representative Eduardo Toniolli said Milei 's statements violate the powers of Congress , which is the body responsible for authorizing and regulating the country's participation in armed conflicts.
In this regard, he stressed that " Argentina's attempt to involve itself in an international conflict without authorization through a specific law (from Congress) is an act that violates all our regulations ."
The purpose of these procedures that go through Parliament , argued Toniolli , would be to prevent international decisions from being made without the participation of the Legislature , thus guaranteeing a consensual and transparent foreign policy .
The congressman stated that this request seeks to open a serious debate regarding the president's statements and the implications they could have for Argentina's foreign policy.
" It's not possible for a president to make statements of this magnitude without the support of Parliament ," he stated, adding that " we will try to broaden support in Congress and have other blocs join this initiative."
Furthermore, Toniolli warned about the risks the president's words pose on the international stage. " Any belligerent could interpret them as a declaration of war and act accordingly ," he warned.
Needless to say, Argentina was the victim of two radical Islamic attacks in the 1990s: the AMIA bombing and the Israeli Embassy bombing.
As expected, Milei 's statements during the interview on the LN+ channel sparked controversy , because she spoke out in harsh terms against the Muslim country's theocratic government , and even claimed that Israel is "saving" modern society in its war against Iran and other Arab nations.
" Israel already saved us from Iraq in 1981; Israel saved us from Syria in 2007; and now it's doing it again. Israel, let's say, is saving Western culture," Milei said brazenly. " It's doing the dirty work that others aren't doing ."
