The squid season for the Galicia fleet in the Malvinas culminated last weekend with a result that, although it did not exceed the optimistic forecasts, was extremely high, according to the Vigo Shipowners' Cooperative ARVI. The Galicians reported that they captured “at least” 55,000 tons of illex squid in the fishing grounds located in the waters surrounding the southern islands where Argentina claims its sovereignty.

The Vigo cooperative has an exclusivity agreement on that fishing ground that it signed with the illegal Malvinas government, ending in 2030 . In any case, the Galicians take it for granted that this condition will be extended to them. In fact, the sale of licenses supports the lavish way of life of the settlers who occupy the archipelago, with the highest per capita income in the world. While the shipowners calmly account for all the squid they can catch, the islanders enjoy the dividends that the abundant royalty grants them. By simply verifying the prices of Patagonian squid in the Spanish market, we can realize the commercial value who acquires the product in Europe. An example of this can be found in the information provided by the Madrid company NOVAFRIGO , which has a kilogram of cephalopod extracted in Argentine waters for 10.50 euros.

Although the cost of the product has been reduced over the last 2 years, from an average of 13 euros to 11, and in this case to 10.50; Multiplying that counter value by those 55,000 tons extracted with an illegal British license, reaches 577,500,000 of that currency. Which represents just over 609 million US dollars. Last Saturday was the last day of fishing for the fleet made up of 16 vessels, which in a month will moor in Vigo or Marín. The 55,000 tons they have in their warehouses represent somewhat less than the volume of the exceptional last year.

But they are still satisfied with the levels achieved. The next harvest will take place between September and October, in the continuity of the illegal depredation that has already been going on for five incessant years, without the Argentine authorities being able to prevent it diplomatically or by any other method.
