Determined to militarily impose control of the Southwestern Atlantic and Antarctica , the United States reviews the Argentine Armed Forces and makes it clear that it will be the one to determine the national Antarctic development, to ensure that the pendular and corruptible local political class does not hand it over to Russia, China or any nation contrary to its interests .
To this end, he sent the new head of the Southern Command, Admiral Alvyn Holsey, to the country on a four-day visit—between Monday, April 28, and Thursday, May 1—where he met with the top brass of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces and its military commander, Brigadier General Xavier Julián Issac ; Defense Minister Luis Petri ; and also, for 45 minutes, with President Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada.
The Argentine government communicated little to nothing . The word, the story, about the presence of the highest US military authority was given, on the one hand, by the US Embassy in Argentina itself, indicating that Washington "is committed to deepening our long-standing defense partnership with Argentina and working together to strengthen regional security"; and on the other hand - so there are no intermediaries - SOUTHCOM itself was who communicated Admiral Holsey 's subsequent trip to Ushuaia, along with the U.S. Embassy's chargé d'affaires, Abigail Dressel , was intended to meet "with the leaders of the Argentine Navy's Southern Naval Area Command" to "observe firsthand the fundamental role they play in protecting maritime routes vital to global trade."
SOUTHCOM's arguments are hardly credible, or at least quite distorted, as to the true reason for their presence in Ushuaia . One is because the vital maritime route for world trade is not in the Beagle Channel but in the Strait of Magellan, and under the domain, control, and government of the Chilean State. And the other is because they went to Ushuaia to monitor the progress of the Integrated Naval Base project for the logistical, scientific, and strategic development of the Antarctic sector. And specifically, to hear a report from the head of the Southern Naval Area; of what happened in the period of one year , after the visit of their predecessor Laura Richardson, on April 3, 2024; when Javier Milei himself committed to involving the United States in the Antarctic military plan.
The only ones who came close to the truth were those published by the Gaceta Marinera , who reported that the American delegation "attended an institutional exhibition in which the role of the Institution in the protection of maritime routes was highlighted, especially with regard to SAR operations, aimed at safeguarding human life at sea, and the Antarctic operations it supports"; and on "the strategic importance of Ushuaia as a gateway to Antarctica and the need to enhance our own Antarctic logistical capabilities."
"In this way," the Navy press outlet added , "the visit contributed to strengthening ties of collaboration and friendship, reaffirming the Argentine Navy's commitment to defending sovereignty and national maritime interests, as well as the strategic importance of Antarctic projection from the country's southern tip."
Along that broad political middle road, where everything seems permitted, the Argentine leadership ignores what is actually being developed against national sovereignty in a territory where the country has seven permanent bases ( Orcadas, San Martín, Carlini, Esperanza, Marambio, Belgrano II, and Petrel) and six temporary ones (Brown, Melchior, Decepción, Cámara, Primavera, and Matienzo); and above all, an effective and uninterrupted presence for 111 years.
In keeping with the current situation , the coalition governing the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, and a large part of the Fuegian leadership, have decided as their sole State Policy to disappear, absent themselves, disengage, and ignore with absolute determination, with full awareness, what is being brewed in broad daylight . All this, with the impunity that grants Milei unconstitutional superpowers, to convince, with the force of money, those who have no problem lowering the flags of the same people they are willing to betray in the present, in order to eternally condition their future.
