The San Carlos de Bariloche City Council declared President Javier Milei "persona non grata" on Thursday, after considering that his statements on April 2 called into question Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvina Islands in favor of the archipelago's inhabitants' right to self-determination.

The resolution was sponsored by Peronist council members Leandro Costa Bruten and Julieta Wallace and approved by a majority of eight votes in favor. The three council members affiliated with the Libertarian Party left the session before the vote.

"Milei is de-Malvinizing Argentina and promoting the self-determination of those who forcibly occupy part of our country," Costa Bruten stated during the legislative debate, in which the president was accused of pursuing a policy of surrendering national sovereignty.

In the same session, the Council declared the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands Memorial Museum of Municipal Interest —still pending inauguration—and distinguished war veteran Pablo Carballo as an Illustrious Citizen .
