The complaint was presented last Thursday to the Chilean embassy in our country.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry presented a complaint about the preparation of a map by the Chilean Navy that shows areas that are part of Argentina as maritime spaces of the trans-Andean country.

The "Illustrative Graphic of the Maritime Spaces of Chilean Jurisdiction" was published by the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of Chile on August 23 and includes the projection of an alleged Chilean continental shelf that overlaps with a sector of the Argentine continental shelf.

This graph was immediately rejected (24 hours later) by Argentina, through a diplomatic note (Nota Suala 35/2023) presented to the Republic of Chile , Foreign Ministry sources told Télam.

This "Illustrative Graphic" does not refer to a new issue, but rather seeks to represent the maritime spaces under Chilean jurisdiction, as arising from Supreme Decree No. 95 published on August 27, 2021 , and in turn seeks to graph the presentation of Chile made before the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf called "Western Continental Shelf of the Chilean Antarctic Territory," the sources added.

Since the beginning of the controversy, the Chilean claim has been rejected by Argentina on repeated occasions, both at the bilateral and multilateral levels, through diplomatic correspondence addressed to the Secretary General of the United Nations and the Secretary General of the International Authority of the Seabed, according to Communiqué No. 344/21 of August 28, 2021.

Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Argentina and Chile

The Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Argentina and Chile, signed on November 29, 1984 in Rome by the then Argentine Foreign Minister Dante Caputo and his Chilean counterpart Jaime del Valle Alliende , resolved definitively and unshakably all maritime disputes between both States. , and the Chilean claim contradicts the letter and spirit of that agreement.

As has been duly reflected in the text and in the maps of the Executive Summary of the presentation made by Argentina before the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLPC) in 2009, the demarcation of the limit of the Argentine continental shelf is in full compliance with the rules of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984.

The now controversial map, prepared by the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy, covers an area of about 5,000 square kilometers south of the Drake Sea and the Cape Horn Islands, on the Argentine maritime territory .
