China arrives in Ushuaia to launch Melella's energy plan

One month after the inspection of Ushuaia by US senators, the governor of Tierra del Fuego and the Chinese ambassador to Argentina launched the construction of a power plant with Chinese technology and financing.

The dispute over strategic investments in Tierra del Fuego has moved from the shadows to the public eye in the space of a month. After a delegation of US senators—led by the "hawks" of the Capitol—flew over the province in January to "monitor" Asian influence, the ambassador of the People's Republic of China, Wang Wei , landed in the capital of Tierra del Fuego to tour, along with Governor Gustavo Melella, the site where the new Ushuaia power plant will be built.

The reality of international politics is clear: while Washington audits, Beijing builds.

The Power Plant for Ushuaia: Investment, Technology and Sovereignty

The project, located on a four-hectare plot of land on Route 35 (across the Olivia River), is much more than a solution to the city's energy crisis. It is an enclave of Chinese technology and financing in the province that has the Beagle Channel, the Le Maire Strait, and Antarctica within its jurisdiction.

Key facts about the work:

The Beijing delegation: A display of "Real Power"

Unlike the US delegation, which focused on lawmakers and security experts, the Chinese delegation accompanying Wang Wei is a catalog of the economic powers that Washington seeks to block :

1.    Huawei Tech Investment: A technology giant that the US (through Tim Walberg) is trying to expel from Argentine data networks, alleging espionage risks.

2.    ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China): The financial engine that sustains China's overseas infrastructure.

3.    Austral Oil and Gas: The visible face of investment in natural resources.

“…welcome to Ambassador Wang Woi and his entourage on their visit to the construction site of China Rainbow’s Ushuaia Power Plant…” reads the caption at the top of the photo published by the Tierra del Fuego government.

The corset of Melella

Governor Gustavo Melella finds himself at the center of unprecedented geopolitical pressure . On one hand, the administration of Javier Milei , unconditionally aligned with Donald Trump , has given the green light to a military "inspection" by the Southern Command and a legislative one by the US. On the other, the province is moving forward with agreements with China that include petrochemicals, infrastructure, housing, and the electronics industry.

"It is a real, concrete investment to solve a real problem," Melella emphasized during the tour, in what can be read as an eloquent response to the national security "concerns" expressed by US Senators Morgan Griffith and Randy Weber during their visit to Tierra del Fuego and Neuquén.

Hemispheric Security vs. Technological Dependence

For the US congressional auditors who toured the province last month, this power plant represents a Trojan horse for Beijing in the South Atlantic. For the Tierra del Fuego government, it is the only viable solution given the lack of national or Western funding for basic infrastructure projects.

The arrival of the anchors at the port of Ushuaia, the equipment for assembling the power plant, symbolizes that the battle for the "End of the World" is in its most decisive phase . Argentina in 2026 is now the chessboard where the two powers are testing each other: one with inspection manuals and the other with the arrival of the first containers with Chinese technology.
