The ARA Almirante Storni (P-53) is the third of four Gowind-class patrol vessels delivered to the Argentine Navy by the French company Naval Gruop , based on a contract made in 2018 by the government of Mauricio Macri. It has the same characteristics as the ARA Piedrabuena , but is better armed and motorized than the Bouchard , equipped with an active stabilization system and a bow thruster. And it is also tested on ice, adapted to navigation in Antarctic waters. It will be the second ship of the Argentine Navy that will bear the name of the Minister of the Navy and Vice Admiral Segundo Rosa Storni. The first was the Fletcher-class destroyer ARA Almirante Storni (D-24).
Naval Group technicians listed the virtues of the offshore patrol vessels they sold to Argentina: Very high resistance and excellent seaworthiness 360° visibility from the bridge and single mast for panoramic radar coverage Fast, safe and discreet deployment of ships of intervention launched by a double system of ramps at the stern Information and command systems that allow exhaustive surveillance of the maritime space and the detection of suspicious behavior. The Patrol Vessel can remain at sea for more than three weeks, reach a speed of 20 knots and accommodate a helicopter. Implemented by a reduced crew of 40 members, it can also add around twenty additional passengers. Likewise, it is expected that the ARA Almirante Storni will subsequently begin its journey to Mar del Plata, where it will have its natural station along with its sister ships, the ARA Bouchard and the ARA Piedrabuena, destined for the control and surveillance of the Economic Zone.
