Through decree 67/2023 published this Thursday, February 9 in the Official Gazette, the reopening of the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in the People's Republic of Bangladesh was ordered, “in accordance with the foreign policy guidelines based on reasons of order political, strategic and commercial”.

The diplomatic representation will be based in the city of Dhaka and is the result of a commercial strategy promoted by Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero , framed in the broad growth of surplus exports of our country and the mutual interest in strengthening cooperation between both peoples. , deepening commercial and cultural ties.

In April 2022, the file for the reopening of this diplomatic headquarters began and last August, Cafiero held a bilateral meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart Abul Kalam Abdul Momen - in New York, within the framework of the 10th Review Conference of the United Nations Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons - with the objective of promoting cooperation, advancing the diversification of trade and strengthening coincidences at the regional and global levels.

Both Cafiero and Abdul Momen highlighted that there is still ample potential for commercial growth, and the importance of diversifying exports was highlighted by promoting ongoing market access negotiations. It should be noted that bilateral trade is around USD 900 annually. million with a large surplus of our country.

Days ago, the Argentine Foreign Minister received in his office the ambassador of Bangladesh in Brasilia - with attendance in Argentina -, Sadia Faizunnesa , to whom he confirmed his visit for next February 27 to inaugurate the new Argentine embassy, as well as develop a trade and investment promotion agenda.

During the meeting, the importance of the visit was highlighted, since it is the first time that a South American Foreign Minister will attend Bangladesh, a country with which we have half a century of diplomatic relations.

With the reopening of the Embassy and its consular section, the aim is to exploit the potential of the bilateral relationship, fundamentally in the commercial aspect, which has ample growth potential, seeking to diversify trade and the Argentine export offer. Likewise, promote cooperation in the sports, satellite, humanitarian aid and disaster management fields.

It is worth remembering that, during 2021, exports to Bangladesh totaled U$D 876 million, a historical maximum, generating a trade surplus of U$D 862 million. The main exported products are soybean oil, flour and pellets from the extraction of soybean, corn and wheat oil, which account for 99% of shipments.Imports were USD 14 million, mainly of clothing.
