The reasons why they are asking for the impeachment of Chancellor Mondino

It is being pushed by UxP legislators. They claim that the agreement secretly concluded by the Minister of Foreign Affairs with Great Britain is "harmful to the country's historical claim."

For the UxP deputies, it “reissues the same conditions” of the Foradori-Duncan pact

The bloc of national deputies of Unión por la Patria presented this Thursday, a request for impeachment against Foreign Minister Diana Mondino for the joint declaration that she sealed with her British counterpart, David Lemmy , regarding the Malvinas Islands, which among other points implies the resumption of the regular weekly flight from San Pablo, with a stopover in Córdoba, resuming the scientific agreement on fishing matters and completing the identity of the last unnamed collective grave, in the military cemetery of Darwin.

At a press conference in the President's office of the bloc, in the Legislative Palace, the Kirchnerist legislators assured that the agreement secretly closed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs is detrimental to the country's historical claim to sovereignty over the Malvinas.

Eduardo Toniolli, one of the project's promoters, said that "since taking office in December, Mondino has favoured, by action and omission, the interests of the United Kingdom of Great Britain in the South Atlantic."

In his opinion, "the chancellor intends to take on functions that are proper to the legislative power, signing international agreements without going through the National Congress."

However, the man from Santa Fe said that "the most serious thing is the underlying issue: Mondino is functional to the British occupation and its policy of militarization and plundering of the South Atlantic."

“Through a joint statement between Mondino and Lammy, we learned of the conclusion of a series of bilateral agreements that offer unacceptable concessions to the occupying power, allowing it to improve logistics and connectivity with the continent and deepen the illegal exploitation of our fishing and hydrocarbon resources ,” he described.

"These agreements recover the topics and spirit of the Foradori-Duncan pact of 2016, during the Macri administration, which was promptly denounced by the Argentine Foreign Ministry, terminating it as of March 2023, as it was considered detrimental to Argentina's historic claim," said Toniolli.

And he concluded: "Mondino cannot continue to be the Argentine foreign minister."

Meanwhile, the head of the UP bloc, Germán Martínez , reinforced the request for impeachment against Mondino and in this regard asked to "rebuild a parliamentary majority around unwavering support for the humanitarian cause" of Malvinas.

"We need a clear majority in the Chamber of Deputies that says: The Malvinas are Argentine and we are not going to back down one millimetre from what the National Constitution says and what is in the hearts of the Argentine people."

In addition, the Santa Fe native urged to "demand the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Foreign Affairs Committee" of the Chamber of Deputies.

The opinion of the veteran deputy of Malvinas

For his part, the UP national deputy and Malvinas veteran Aldo Leiva spoke of “a new surrender” by the Government to the British “usurper” and said that he could not expect anything else from a presidential official who “admires the war criminal Margaret Thatcher.”

"We all sang at the World Cup 'to the kids of Malvinas that we will never forget'. And it seems that, in this regard, the first thing they did was forget about the kids of Malvinas, forget about the Homeland, defend our sovereignty," the man from Chaco complained.

The list of Deputies who requested the impeachment of Diana Mondino.

For Leiva, Mondino's agreement with the United Kingdom "is an act of enormous betrayal that causes us enormous pain and that, without a doubt, affects the true heroes who are those who gave their lives for our country" and "each one of the relatives of our fallen."

“Beyond Mondino, I am convinced that the fight must continue and that we must do so within the sphere that corresponds to us. The islands are, were and will be Argentine,” he concluded.

Also speaking was the deputy Agustina Propato , who weeks ago found herself in the centre of attention when she resisted the unusual request of the British ambassador to change a T-shirt that claimed Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas during an official ceremony in Congress.

"Contempt" for heroes

For the Buenos Aires native, the agreement with Great Britain promoted by Mondino "expresses contempt for the Malvinas, contempt for Argentina, contempt for the struggles, contempt for national dignity, contempt for true heroes."

According to him, the new joint declaration between the foreign ministers of both countries "re-enacts the same conditions" of the Foradori-Duncan pact that took place during the Cambiemos government.

“We have seen a press release, which is actually more of a memorandum of understanding, an agreement between two nations. And we all know that according to Argentine public international law, for this to have any value, it must go through the National Congress, according to article 75, paragraph 22 of our National Constitution. This has not happened,” denounced the Kirchnerist deputy.

The press conference was also attended by Roxana Monzón, Juan Manuel Pedrini, Ricardo Herrera, Jorge Neri Araujo, Andrés Freites, Carolina Yutrovic, Jorge Romero and Eduardo Valdés.

The president of the National Confederation of Malvinas War Veterans, Ramón Robles, spoke on behalf of the CECIM La Plata, and the head of the CECIM, Rodolfo Carrizo, spoke on behalf of two of the three legal complaints filed against Mondino in recent weeks.

At the end, the president of the Federal Union of Relatives of Fallen in Malvinas, Alejandra González, also gave her testimony and support for the initiative.
