The frank and encouraging support for the Malvinas cause expressed by the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, during his visit to our country, the first since he took office as the first president of our neighbor, was no less forceful because it was expected. “Fair, legitimate and worthy of the people and the Argentine State,” Boric clearly described the Argentine claim on the Malvinas Islands, so that no one has any doubts.
During a joint statement at the Casa Rosada with the Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, and after signing a series of bilateral agreements, the Chilean president emphasized before Argentine journalists his well-known position regarding the claim for Argentine sovereignty over the archipelagos of the South Atlantic. He pointed out that it is the same as that held by those who preceded him, “from Patricio Aylwin to Sebastián Piñera.”
“I have no doubt which side to be on. By the way, always on the side of peace and these conflicts have to be resolved peacefully,” he added. Of course, Boric also advocated that the dispute over the demarcation of the southern continental shelf, with sectors that both countries claim as their own, also be resolved diplomatically. For this reason, he separated this conflict from his decision to deepen “our cultural relations, in energy matters, in economic and political matters” with Argentina.
The Chilean president also stated that, due to his personal history, “I feel a deep brotherhood: I grew up in Patagonia and in Patagonia there is no border. That spirit of cooperation, replicate it,” he proposed. Finally, he announced new winds in Chile in terms of alliances and positioning: “Although for a long time we were looking in other directions, towards the north and the Pacific, with relationships that we want to maintain and deepen, our base is America, and, since there, we are going to build community, region, cooperation and internationalism.”
Gabriel Boric's assessments regarding his position on the Malvinas and the renewed relationship that will now open with our country were made known while in parallel he signed several agreements and memoranda this Monday with Alberto Fernández. The objective is to strengthen the strategic and cooperative relationship between both countries.
The governor of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands, transmitted from his Twitter account his approval for the statements of Chilean President Gabriel Boric, in relation to the Malvinas. “As governor of the province that has under its jurisdiction the Malvinas, Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the corresponding maritime and insular areas, I am grateful on behalf of all Fuegian men and women for the reaffirmation of the support of the brother Chilean people in the recognition of the right "which assists the Argentine Republic to take legal action, with full respect for current treaties and International Law, against unauthorized activities in said area," said Melella.
Appealing to the slogan “Malvinas unites us”, the Fuegian governor extended it “to all the brother peoples who fight against the scourge of colonialism in the 21st century.” And in this sense he emphasized: “Thank you very much President Gabriel Boric for your invaluable support in this objective.” Source Télam https://www.telam.com.ar/notas/202204/588504-argentina-chile-atrabajos.html
