On Wednesday, December 10, the British oil company Rockhopper Exploration plc announced it had given the green light to the exploitation of the Sea Lion oil field, located on the Argentine Continental Shelf, north of the Malvina Islands archipelago. This announcement represents the consolidation of a 15-year process of economic usurpation and highlights the serious escalation of British colonialism in the South Atlantic.
The company, along with its Israeli partner Navitas Petroleum , reported that it had made the Final Investment Decision (FID) , a step that ensures it has raised the necessary funds and obtained formal approval from the usurping British colony, to begin drilling and developing the field, located 218 km north of the Malvina Islands.
The offshore exploitation is projected for an initial phase of 35 years , solidifying the illegal economic presence of the United Kingdom over natural resources that legitimately belong to the Argentine Republic.
The multi-million dollar investment for an illegal business
The technical announcement, made public on the London Stock Exchange, secures $1.8 billion in financing to achieve "First Oil." This milestone, according to the company's plans, would occur in 2028 , as part of a total investment plan estimated at $2.1 billion .
The Sea Lion oil field is so vast that it is considered “world-class .” A June 2025 report by the consulting firm Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc. (NSAI) estimated reserves totaling 917 million barrels of oil, illustrating the immense wealth that the British colonial enclave is poised to illegally extract from the Argentine subsoil.

Rockhopper's confirmation that these funds were raised comes after receiving approval from the illegitimate government of the Malvina Islands to proceed with the plundering of Argentine resources .
Rockhopper CEO Sam Moody celebrated the announcement as "the culmination of more than 20 years of work," deliberately ignoring that the basis of that work is territorial usurpation and non-compliance with United Nations (UN) resolutions.
15 years of colonial advance
This announcement is not an isolated event, but the culmination of a process that began with the first exploration contracts illegally granted by the colony starting in 2010. This oil advance marks the second phase of the British colonial strategy to expand its economy based on the occupied territory.
Argentine negligence
From the point of view of the violation of Argentine sovereignty, this announcement is a serious warning that demands a response from the State .
Rockhopper 's oil advance, despite its illegality, has been facilitated by the persistent negligence of various Argentine governments in implementing an active and forceful foreign policy to defend sovereignty and resources .
However, there is a precedent showing that the Argentine state can halt this type of development. During Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's second term, a legal process was initiated that temporarily paralyzed operations and generated a significant political and legal cost for the companies involved .
Rockhopper's decision to move forward with key contracts, such as the chartering of a Floating Production Unit (FPSO) and drilling contracts , should compel the Argentine government, and especially that of Tierra del Fuego, to urgently resume legal and diplomatic action .
The start of drilling in 2028 not only implies a multi-million dollar plundering, but also a high environmental risk due to the possibility of an oil spill in an area of extremely high ecosystem value. Sovereignty is not only territorial, but also the defense of the nation's natural heritage .
The Argentine State must act immediately to reaffirm to the international community that the unilateral acts of the British colony on the Argentine Continental Shelf are null, illegal and of no legal value , halting this new and dangerous chapter of the usurpation of the Malvinas Islands and their maritime spaces.
