An impossible truce: The boiling point of southern Peronism on April 2nd

The 2027 election race has begun, and the contest will be on full display today and tomorrow at the Rio Grande Vigil and the main event in Ushuaia, on the day the nation and its veterans honor their dead.

1 de April de 2026 19:09

Vigil in the city of Río Grande, where the governors Axel Kicillof of Buenos Aires and Ricardo Quintela of La Rioja, national senators and deputies, and mayors from other jurisdictions will be present.

The arrival of Axel Kicillof (Buenos Aires) and Ricardo Quintela (La Rioja) is not an isolated gesture. Both governors seek to consolidate themselves as the clearest poles of opposition to Javier Milei 's administration. But they don't arrive alone; they are accompanied by a large delegation representing the various factions within Peronism and its allies.

The list of confirmed visitors includes:

2. Two events, two political climates

The delegation's agenda is divided between the two epicenters of Argentine sovereignty:

3. Tierra del Fuego: One province, three fractures

Governor Gustavo Melella is facing his most critical moment. His FORJA origins and his historical balance are not enough to contain the internal fragmentation. While he grapples with the financial strangulation he himself created and which has been reinforced by... The Nation —as with the intervention in the port of Ushuaia—, must manage a forced coexistence with the three mayors (Pérez, Vuoto and Harrington) who today turn their backs on it.

4. The Villarruel factor and the libertarian void

The most notable absence is that of Vice President Victoria Villarruel . Despite being the first to announce her attendance in Río Grande, her last-minute cancellation avoids an awkward photo opportunity: the vice president sharing the stage with the top brass of the hardline opposition. This withdrawal suggests a strategy to avoid further friction with President Milei on a date of heightened patriotic sentiment.

Thus, this April 2nd in Tierra del Fuego will be a reminder that Argentine politics knows no truce. Between the Patagonian cold and the heat of seemingly irreversible confrontations, Peronism seeks in the South the oxygen it lacks in the country's center. The battle for 2027 has begun, and its first battle lines will be drawn today and tomorrow, while the nation honors its fallen dead.
