With the need to renew its fleet , the Argentine Navy has set its sights on the acquisition of three submarines of the 209NG class, manufactured in Germany .
The deal, which could cost as much as $4.3 billion , would come with a financial guarantee from the German government, facilitating access to long-term loans that would be crucial to modernizing an ailing naval system.
The ongoing negotiations aim to revitalize Argentina's submarine capacity , which was severely affected after the tragic disappearance of the ARA San Juan in 2017 .
The country's submarine fleet has since been stripped of its operational assets, highlighting the urgent need to return submarines to service.
In this sense, Germany not only presents itself as a supplier , but also offers training for the crew and a supply of spare parts , vital aspects to maintain the operational capacity of the new submarines.
The 209NG submarine, also known as “ Next Generation ”, includes the possibility of equipping it with an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system , which considerably extends its submerged autonomy and improves its stealth capabilities.
However, Germany is not the only nation interested in establishing military ties with Argentina . France has indicated its intention to submit a similar offer , which would include submarines of the Scorpène class, another model known for its combat effectiveness.
