The “Caoba”, a 15-meter-long sailboat, set sail from the city of Mar del Plata with three crew members bound for Puerto Argentino on Soledad Island in the Malvinas archipelago. At noon on Tuesday, January 7, Sigfrido Nielsen , the captain, gave the order to set sail from the pier of the Argentine Yacht Club.
He is accompanied by Alejandro Diego, a former combatant who spent two and a half months on the islands in 1982, and Pablo Leoni , a seasoned crew member who has already sailed with Nielsen on the Caoba to the South Atlantic. Alejandro said he was eager and very excited to fulfill his dream of sailing around the islands again, as he did during the war.
After travelling the eight hundred nautical miles that separate Puerto Argentino from the port of Mar del Plata, the “Caoba” plans to circumnavigate Soledad Island, visiting significant scenes of the war and seeking to establish links with local sailors and other residents.
“After completing this stage of approximately two weeks, and after resupplying and embarking two crew members, the Caoba will head north towards Buenos Aires,” details Mdz Online.
