The 2026 Census will allow for an update of the population composition of the islands and will reopen the discussion about who inhabits the Malvinas and who actually makes up its electorate.(*)

Tailored Demographics

The opening of registration for the 2026 Census , reported on September 18 by Malvina Islands Television (FITV) , once again highlights the demographic makeup of a society considerably more heterogeneous than the generic political category of Malvina Islanders . The primary statistical source is the Malvina Islands 2021 Census Report , produced by the Directorate of Policy, Economy & Corporate Services of the Malvina Islands Government (FIG) . The survey, conducted on October 10, 2021, counted 3,142 usual residents present on census night and estimated a total usual population of 3,662, including approximately 520 temporarily absent residents. The official report also reveals a population comprised of numerous birthplaces and nationalities, in an economy that relies significantly on workers from abroad. The new survey will allow researchers to determine how much this structure has changed over the last five years and to update variables related to population, housing, employment, and social composition. The administrative preparations for the operation are already outlined in documentation from the FIG itself, which published its Privacy Notice – Census 2026 on September 17, 2026 .

However , population, residency, legal status, and the electorate are not equivalent categories within the islands' own legal framework. The distinction arises from a regulatory structure built under British authority: the Malvina Islands Constitution Order 2008 , approved by the Crown by Order in Council and in force since January 1, 2009, establishes the constitutional framework; the Immigration Ordinance 1999 regulates entry, stay, and residency; the Malvina Islands Status legislation establishes a specific legal category of status; and electoral regulations determine who can be registered to vote. The Malvina Islands Government Registry 's own documentation requires distinguishing between, among other elements, British citizenship, Malvina Islands Status , residency, and voting registration history. Therefore, a person can be physically present on the islands, work there, and even reside there for years without this automatically making them a member of the electorate. The island demos does not necessarily coincide with the census population : it results from constitutional, migratory, status and electoral rules that determine who can enter, remain, reside permanently, acquire a legal status of belonging and ultimately participate in the formation of local political will.

Currently, the United Nations continues to classify the islands as Non-Self-Governing Territories , with the United Kingdom identified as the administering power , while the Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24) continues to examine the issue. London maintains that it is the islanders' right to self-determination; Argentina, on the other hand, argues that the specific status recognized by Resolution 2065 requires resolving a bilateral sovereignty dispute by taking into account the interests—and not the desires as an independent source of territorial title—of the inhabitants. The 2026 Census will not resolve this divergence, but it will allow for the formulation, on a renewed empirical basis, of a legally crucial question: who actually inhabits the islands and by what British regulations is the demos selected from within that population, the demos to which London attributes the exercise of self-determination?
