The first F-16s will arrive in December, but the air force lacks the fuel to fly them.

According to Lieutenant General Paleo, they will arrive with the stigma of being part of a "planned capitulation," guaranteeing to Great Britain that they will not affect the security of the colony in the Malvinas.

The arrival of the first six F-16 aircraft is scheduled for December 5th.

The national government has transformed the arrival of the first six F-16 fighter jets, scheduled for December 5th, into a spectacle of national sovereignty. Defense Minister Luis Petri has spared no adjectives in describing this acquisition as "historic," the most important in 40 years.

The announcement, amplified on social media, is part of a narrative of recovering strategic capabilities and a symbolic rearmament of the Argentine Air Force.

However, behind this facade of resurrected power, lies a reality of chronic disinvestment and strategic contradictions that empty the operation of content.

The Ministry of Defense's paraphernalia includes a detailed description of the infrastructure works undertaken in the Río Cuarto Material Area and the VI Air Brigade of Tandil , emphasizing the reconditioning of military platforms and taxiways, the construction of new hangars, perimeter fencing, monitoring centers and the inauguration of an advanced Tactical Simulation Center, preparing the ground for the operational deployment of the 24 fourth-generation multirole fighters.

However, this triumphalist narrative is fractured by the public denunciation of Lieutenant General (R) Juan Martín Paleo, former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Paleo not only questions the purchase , but also makes a very serious accusation: the Secretary of International Defense Affairs, Juan Battaleme, allegedly assured the United Kingdom that these F-16s do not represent a threat to its interests in the Malvina Islands . For Paleo , this is "the confession of a planned capitulation," where the acquisition of " a castrated weapon, incapable of projecting real power" over the occupying power of our territory is celebrated.

The controversy stems from an even deeper structural problem: budgetary constraints. Far from the image of a force undergoing renewal, an internal Air Force report, cited by Paleo , describes an institution on the verge of operational collapse . The national aeronautical infrastructure suffers from obsolete machinery, cracked runways, and deteriorating hangars. The equipment budget has been reduced to such meager levels that, based on current operating costs, each of the sophisticated F-16s could barely accumulate two flight hours per year.

This stark budgetary reality turns the multi-million dollar investment into a costly farce . The aircraft, symbols of modern military technology, run the serious risk of becoming what Paleo defines as "steel ghosts on ghost bases." An imposing fleet for official photographs, but inoperable due to a lack of funds for fuel, maintenance, and, crucially, for future pilots to complete the flight hours necessary to master them.

The paradox intensifies when contrasting the speed with which this purchase was made and with the financing of joint exercises with foreign powers, with the abandonment of national geostrategic projects, such as the Integrated Naval Base of Ushuaia.

The government is announcing the arrival of the planes with great fanfare while, simultaneously, managing a 2026 budget for the Armed Forces that is meager and minimal, incapable of sustaining its actual operational capacity.

In short, the F-16M program stands as the perfect symbol of a schizophrenic defense policy . On the one hand, there are bombastic gestures and an overacted and implausible narrative of sovereignty; on the other, a disinvestment that guarantees impotence and strategic concessions that, according to serious accusations, curtail any real claim to deterrence.

Rather than a qualitative leap, the operation seems to create an illusory scenario where national defense is reduced to the acquisition of military hardware, while the capacity to use it is systematically dismantled, in an act that amounts to a kind of voluntary and announced surrender.
