Melella warns about the consequences of the Antarctic cooperation agreement between Chile and Great Britain

The governor of Tierra del Fuego, Gustavo Melella, warned about the British policy “of obtaining regional partners that allow it to consolidate its illegal presence in the Malvinas Islands and in the Argentine Antarctic Sector, deepening the violation of the territorial integrity” of the province he leads.

The “Letter of Intent on United Kingdom-Chile Antarctic Cooperation 2023 to 2028”, signed in Santiago, on December 7.

In a tweet uploaded to his account this afternoon, the Fuegian president emphasized the adverse consequences for the province of Tierra del Fuego, which are printed in the British-Chilean agreements, gathered in the “Letter of Intent on United Kingdom-Chile Antarctic Cooperation.” 2023 to 2028” , dated December 7th.

He asks the Minister of Foreign Affairs Diana Mondino , “to work together on these issues, and form a foreign policy that is up to these challenges”; and specifically; “the interjurisdictional articulation between the Nation and the Province in order to send an unequivocal and forceful message to those who attack our sovereignty.”

The Letter of Intent 2023-2028 between Chile and the United Kingdom to which Gustavo Melella refers, reflects the joint commitment of both nations to preserve Antarctica as a natural reserve dedicated to peace and science in four areas of cooperation, which includes; bilateral dialogue on Antarctic Affairs, participation in the Antarctic Treaty System, scientific cooperation and other exchanges.

This poses challenges for Argentina, which has maintained sovereignty claims in the region since the installation of the Orcadas Base in 1904. Antarctica, although uninhabited, is the subject of territorial dispute. Seven countries, including Argentina, Chile and the United Kingdom, claim parts of its extensive territory.

In this context, the agreement between Chile and the United Kingdom may influence territorial claims, since both countries partially or totally overlap their claims with those of Argentina.

“Our country is going through an extremely complex moment economically, socially and institutionally, but this should not overshadow fundamental issues for the Nation such as its sovereignty and the preservation of its territorial integrity”; observes the Fuegian governor , in his Twitter thread; beyond the difficult and complex political-governmental situation that the country as a whole is going through.
