They rescue a crew member of the Angelescu scientific vessel that crashed near South Georgia

He suffered a crushed right leg and needed emergency medical assistance.

During the morning of Thursday, when the research vessel “Víctor Angelescu” was sailing approximately 90 nautical miles from the South Georgia Islands, it issued a call for help because a 55-year-old man had suffered a crush on his right leg.

The INIDEP scientific vessel sails the southern waters carrying out a study focused on the study of toothfish and ice fish, after ten years without Argentine research in this territory.

At the time of the accident, the ARA icebreaker “Almirante Irízar”, which was sailing in the Drake Passage, heading towards the city of Ushuaia, assumed the task of providing support to the request for help and immediately headed towards the position of the “ “Victor Angelescu.”

The encounter between the Argentine Navy ship and the “Víctor Angelescu” occurred in the late hours of Friday night and during the morning of this Saturday the injured man was transported with a Naval Aviation Sea King helicopter from the deck of the “ Angelescu” to the ARA icebreaker “Almirante Irízar”, where he received more complex health care, it was found that he had a fibula fracture, he was stable and was immobilized with a cast, to finally begin his transfer to a hospital in the city of Ushuaia.

The Maritime, River and Lake Search and Rescue Coordinating Center (MRCC) Ushuaia assumed the management of the SAR case following the request for assistance issued by the oceanographic fisheries research vessel, dependent on the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP).
