In a parody of Gustavo Melella's failed first political project for the 2019-2023 term, which promised "We're Going to Live Better," Jack Ford , a member of the Colonia Legislative Assembly and president of the Budget Committee, presented his colleagues with the annual budget for the 2026/2027 fiscal year . This financial plan is guided by a strict principle: "living within our means." This fiscal and economic framework, which came into effect on June 1, 2026, and will extend until May 31, 2027, marks the financial debut of the illegitimate legislature elected last December.

The slogan "living within our means" reflects the colony's need to self-finance and discipline its current expenses in a scenario of strong pressure on its traditional income, while simultaneously supporting an aggressive infrastructure plan key to the arrival of the oil industry.
To facilitate understanding of the economic volume handled by the British enclave, the official figures originally presented in pounds sterling have been converted to US dollars, taking as a reference an average exchange rate of $1.28 dollars per pound.
Financial X-ray of the enclave: The numbers of the 2026/2027 budget
The colony project has a total budget of $276.8 million (£216.3 million). Although Standard & Poor's (S&P) reaffirmed the archipelago's credit rating at "A+ with a stable outlook," Jack Ford acknowledged that the project was designed within a complex financial framework.

Corporate income tax revenue has fallen significantly due to the poor returns and difficulties experienced by the fishing industry in recent seasons, particularly with fluctuations in squid catches . In addition, returns on financial investments have declined because the company has used its liquid reserves to directly finance its infrastructure plan.
Even so, the imposed fiscal policy obliges the illegitimate government to maintain uncommitted reserves equivalent to at least 1.5 times its operating expenditure , a limit that they project could come under strain towards fiscal year 2028/2029 if the current tourniquet on ordinary expenditures is not applied.
The cost of infrastructure and the burden of debt
The colony must make its first interest payments this year, totaling $11.5 million (£9 million), on a $192 million (£150 million) privately placed loan taken out to finance infrastructure. This debt is part of an ambitious ten-year capital investment program projected at $460.8 million (£360 million).
Although the provisional closing of the previous fiscal year (2025/2026) improved compared to the initial projections thanks to one-off extraordinary income and the under-execution of items, achieving a surplus of $7.3 million (£5.7 million), the current margin is extremely narrow.
The projected operating surplus for the 2026/2027 cycle is $11.7 million , but once the loan interest is deducted, they acknowledge that the colony's actual net surplus is reduced to a mere $256,000 (£0.2 million), a negligible figure compared to the $38 million target that the colonial administration considers necessary to autonomously guarantee capital maintenance and debt support.
Rates, freezes, and social control to sustain revenue collection
To mitigate the financial shortfall without resorting to borrowing for current expenses — which they are self-prohibited by financial statute — the usurpers have designed a budget that shifts the tax burden directly onto public rates, consumption, and certain benefits for residents:
· Salary adjustment: For the public sector, a fixed annual salary increase of $640 (£500), payable in 12 installments, was agreed upon, effective July. And from January 2027, the hourly wage will increase by 5.3%, from the current $12.36 (£9.66) to $13.01 (£10.17). (The basic salary for the lowest rank of public employees in the colony is $2,010 per month) .
Port logistics and the "Sea Lion" oil horizon
The primary destination for every pound saved under the austerity policy has a clear name: logistics consolidation . The capital program is entirely focused on the progress of four megaprojects : the definitive replacement of the port with a 500-meter multimodal facility (using custom-designed floating barges currently under construction in China) , a new power plant, the third phase of the wind farm, and the comprehensive waste treatment plant.
Additionally, to urgently address the housing shortage that is hindering the arrival of skilled and professional workers, the budget allocates $12.8 million (£10 million) for accelerated housing development in a planned urban area south of Puerto Argentino. Thirty modular units will be installed there within twelve months, built in direct partnership with Navitas Petroleum.
This political and fiscal budgetary direction is key. It revolves around the Sea Lion offshore oil project, its "Final Investment Decision," and its official publication by the company, which coincided with the presentation of the 2026/2027 budget . The British-Israeli consortium plans to begin exploratory drilling in 2027, with the formal start of commercial hydrocarbon production in the first quarter of 2028.
Anticipating the massive influx of money this will entail, the current colonial legislature has already begun the technical and political work to sanction and implement a Sovereign Fund , specifically designed to safeguard and manage future royalties derived from the illegal extraction of Argentine hydrocarbon resources.
