King George Island in Chile, known in Argentina as 25 de Mayo Island and in Russia as Waterloo Island, is the largest of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica.

The pier will be 75 meters long and have an additional 40 meters of port support area, totaling 1,689 square meters . The surface will be paved with reinforced concrete. The goal is to facilitate the embarkation and disembarkation of people and cargo, improving the supply of Chilean bases in Antarctica and strengthening the country's presence in the region. The project has an investment of more than $27 million, financed by the Chilean Ministry of Public Works.

The construction of this pier is part of a context of growing international interest in the Antarctic region. Recently, the presence of international players in the area has intensified, prompting Chile to strengthen its infrastructure and presence on the Antarctic continent.

The project not only has logistical implications but also geopolitical ones, as it seeks to reaffirm Chile's territorial claims in Antarctica and strengthen its role as a relevant player in the region. Punta Arenas is the continental gateway, where 24 countries have a logistical base for scientific operations on the Antarctic continent.
