The Argentine government will buy obsolete armored vehicles from the US that not even the Army wants.

The Libertarian government announced the acquisition of 8x8 M1126 Stryker armored vehicles from the United States. A multi-million-dollar deal marked by overpricing, which demonstrates another facet of political subservience to the Trump administration.

The transaction represents a $32 million premium over the Brazilian offer.

The acquisition of the unused armored vehicles in the US , valued at approximately $100 million for 27 units , was confirmed by Defense Minister Luis Petri during a ceremony at the Pentagon with the US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth , in which both hailed a supposed step forward in the "defense of freedom."

But this optimism contrasts with the critical view of military and political sectors , who warn about the implications of this purchase . The decision was made ignoring Brazil's proposal , which offered vehicles of similar quality and quantity , for a value approximately $32 million less .

The Brazilian offer included the delivery of 161 units of the Guaraní model , newly manufactured , with its own technology , and with the advantage of offering technological transfer , local production and greater regional integration .

In comparison, the 8x8 M1126 Stryker armored vehicles that will arrive in Argentina, although better known for their presence in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan , have more limited conditions : they are not amphibious , they are not designed to ford rivers , they are used and reconditioned , and they have a shorter useful life , in addition to a high maintenance cost .

Authoritative voices within the Army itself do not hide their bewilderment . A senior officer stated that "the Army never asked for them" and accused the purchase of being the result of "a purely geopolitical decision: a nod to Washington that raises barriers to local industry and Mercosur," highlighting the disconnect with the tactical needs of the sector .

According to information released by various specialized media , the specimens that will arrive on Argentine soil are in a state of preservation and have not been used in military operations , being stored in North American territory .

However, the option of a purchase for a smaller amount of money and with technology transfer by Brazil seemed much more logical , even given regional relations .

The difference is not minor in a scenario where the Argentine state is undergoing severe adjustments in areas such as health, education, and social security . The purchase of used and more expensive military equipment , in addition to the lack of support from domestic industry , demonstrates that the true motivation behind the operation responds more to political interests than to a genuine defense plan .

From a technical standpoint, Stryker armored vehicles do not fit into a modern force framework : they are not amphibious , they are nearly 25 years old , and they were designed for conflict environments in Iraq and Afghanistan —where they proved vulnerable to improvised explosive devices —limiting their usefulness in contemporary combat scenarios .

The current trend in global armed forces is toward vehicles with active protection systems , modular armor , and digital capabilities , features that these vehicles do not possess .

The US Army itself , which once used the Stryker in combat operations , is developing replacements with more advanced features , without these past models being considered in its new military strategies .

The Argentine acquisition , therefore, reinforces this technological and operational gap . Defense experts warn that what is offered on the international market under official programs is often obsolete technology , surplus military stockpiles , refurbished at high prices , which clashes with the modernization promises the national government is trying to sell .

Furthermore, this purchase is part of a context of complete alignment with the United States in matters of Defense , following the acquisition of F-16 aircraft and the attempt to join NATO , decisions that have raised tensions around the country's technological sovereignty and the debates on independence in military decisions .

Argentina continues on a path of automatic alignment with Washington , relegating national strategic interests to the background. The acquisition of these "secondhand" armored vehicles at an exorbitant price reflects a policy that prioritizes geopolitics over the country's well-being and sovereignty .
