Due to the large icebergs that existed, the supply operation was carried out with Sea King helicopters.

Continuing with the planned itinerary for the first stage of the 2024/25 Antarctic Summer Campaign, the Argentine Navy's Icebreaker ARA “Almirante Irízar” entered the Antarctic Strait last Monday after sailing in adverse weather and glaciological conditions, arriving at the Joint Antarctic Base Petrel, located on Dundee Island for resupply. Under the command of Captain Sebastián Musa and with the operational support of the Joint Antarctic Command (COCOANTAR), essential logistical tasks were carried out.

In view of the presence of frozen water and large icebergs, which made direct landing impossible, it was decided to use Sea King helicopters to transport personnel, supplies and equipment, including an antenna to improve cell phone communications. In addition, The withdrawal of personnel who completed their wintering in Petrel took place, a base that seeks to consolidate itself as the logistical epicenter of Argentine Antarctic operations.

Joint Base Petrel Antarctica will feature advanced infrastructure, including thermal living facilities, a modern kitchen, bakery, radio station, medical and dental offices, diagnostic imaging and emergency capacity. These facilities will use clean and sustainable energy, as well as a landing strip for aircraft and helicopters.

After completing the tasks in Petrel, the “Irízar” carried out a replenishment maneuver with the ARA “Puerto Argentino” notice, belonging to the Naval, Amphibious and Logistics Command of the Sea Fleet. Both units sailed together until they found ice-free waters, allowing the icebreaker to transfer 22 m³ of drinking water. Then, the “Puerto Argentino” continued towards the Joint Antarctic Base Carlini, while the “Irízar” headed for the Esperanza Base.
