Last Thursday, the emblematic ship of the Argentine Navy arrived at Ushuaia Bay , after more than 40 days of intense activity , where it carried out various operations in multiple Antarctic bases .
During its voyage, which included the dangerous navigation through the Drake Passage, the ARA “Almirante Irízar” was dedicated to resupplying the Joint Antarctic Bases (BAC) that Argentina maintains on the white continent.
The operations lasted 43 days , during which the icebreaker provided vital supplies to the Orcadas, Belgrano II, Carlini, Marambio, Petrel, and Esperanza bases. The temporary closure of the Cámara base was also carried out.
The deployment of the ARA “Almirante Irízar” was accompanied by the Sea King helicopters of the Second Naval Squadron and the ARA “Puerto Argentino” (AVPA) aviso , thus facilitating the unloading of approximately 215 tons of general cargo.
Included in that volume were crucial supplies such as machinery, tools, non-perishable and refrigerated food, as well as more than 650,000 liters of Antarctic diesel , an essential input for operations in extreme conditions.
One of the most important tasks was the reintegration of the crews operating at the Orcadas and Belgrano II bases , which are critical to the Argentine presence in the region.
In addition, the ARA “Almirante Irízar” was also responsible for the removal of waste generated at the bases , a fundamental aspect in the preservation of the Antarctic environment .
The ship not only fulfilled its logistical function, but also facilitated the mission of scientists from the National Antarctic Directorate (DNA).
These specialists carried out research in areas such as seismology, geodesy, and studies on cetaceans and birds , in addition to advancing communication and architectural projects that are essential for the operation of the Antarctic Bases .
The mission of the “Almirante Irízar” was not only limited to logistical replenishment , but also included the operation with the logistics ship ARA “Patagonia” in a replenishment maneuver at sea.
