The British Ministry of Defense reported on Thursday that " Resurfacing work on the Mount Pleasant complex runway has been completed ahead of schedule," it reported on its website.
The Mount Pleasant military complex is NATO's most important operational centre in the South Atlantic, built in 1985 by Great Britain following the 1982 war.
It is “an important overseas base (…) run by the UK Strategic Command. It is a vital air link between the Malvina Islands and the UK,” they say.
The project cost £20 million, or about US$25.4 million . 20,000 m2 of material was removed from the airfield's operational surface and replaced with high-quality asphalt, produced in a concrete plant built specifically for the project.
The Foxtrot taxiway and the part of the runway where aircraft touch down on landing were resurfaced. All equipment and materials were transported by ship from the UK, a journey of 8,000 miles.
