According to the LaPolíticaOnLine (LPO) portal, the “diplomats of the Foreign Ministry are on alert due to the possibility of a promotion that is making noise. It is Mariana Plaza, current ambassador in London, but she does not have the rank to hold that position, and her husband Carlos Gonzalo Ortiz de Zárate is her second in command.”
In July 2024, the files of Plaza and Ortíz de Zárate were removed by Senator José Mayans from the promotions approved by the Senate in the middle of last year.
"The de facto ambassador to the United Kingdom was fourth in the diplomatic hierarchy," LPO said, adding that sources from the Foreign Ministry said that "she is very pro-British and was the ideologist of the rapprochement with England."
The documents had been sent to Congress by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Worship, Diana Mondino , and were left pending. It is not clear whether they have the endorsement of the current foreign minister, Gerardo Werthein , who has put many of the appointments on hold as part of a comprehensive review of the Foreign Ministry.
This includes the unification of diplomatic offices as part of the spending cuts plan and the suspension of some appointments in key embassies, for example, in Spain where the dispute is strong or in the United States where the position has been designated but has yet to be confirmed.
Mariana Plaza , 49 years old, is from the city of Coronel Pringles, Buenos Aires province. She completed her primary studies at the Colegio Sagrado Corazón and her secondary studies at the Escuela Agrotécnica in said city, as described by El Orden de Pringles . A graduate in International Relations, she has a controversial career within the diplomatic world, as she is considered the ideologist of the policy of collaboration with the British in exchange for dropping the claim to the Malvinas.
Carlos III received the Argentine Ambassador, Mariana Plaza , last Wednesday, who presented her credentials and they had a conversation of approximately 20 minutes, reported A24.
Plaza was already working at the Argentine Embassy in London, in the position of Business Affairs before being appointed “de facto ambassador”. She also had diplomatic experience in Buenos Aires, Kenya and Uruguay.
