National deputy Jorge Taiana presented a bill in the lower house, which proposes the placement of signs in all public and private schools in the country to inform about the distance between each educational establishment and the Malvina Islands.

The initiative establishes that the measure will be mandatory for all levels and modalities of the national education system and aims to strengthen the training of students in the so-called "Malvinas Question", in line with the constitutional mandate and the National Education Law.

As Taiana explained when presenting the project, the proposal aims to "bring the Malvinas cause closer to new generations" and considers that the school is the environment where "a common historical consciousness is built and the values of national identity, sovereignty and democratic commitment are strengthened."

The text stipulates that the distance shown on each sign must be determined by the National Geographic Institute, which will create an official database for all educational establishments in the country. Furthermore, the signs must include a reference to Argentine sovereignty over the islands and educational content appropriate for each educational level.

In the arguments, Taiana maintains that the Malvinas issue “occupies a central place in the historical, political and territorial identity of the Argentine Republic” and recalls that the National Constitution defines the recovery of sovereignty over the islands as a “permanent and inalienable” objective of the Argentine people.

The legislator argues that the education system is a strategic space for transmitting to new generations the historical, geographical, and legal aspects related to Argentina's claim. In this regard, he points out that the National Education Law already establishes the teaching of the Malvinas cause as mandatory content in all jurisdictions of the country.

The proposal envisions a shared financing scheme between the Nation and the provinces, with a maximum term of two years to complete the installation of the signage once the law is regulated.

For Taiana, the placement of these signs will allow "building a symbolic bridge" between the mainland and the islands, as well as encouraging students' interest in the history of the sovereignty claim, the Malvinas War, the role of diplomacy, and the recognition of veterans and those who died in the conflict.

“Specifying a specific distance in kilometers gives materiality to a concept that is often abstract,” argues the project, which seeks to turn this geographical reference into a pedagogical tool for working on content related to history, geography, and civic education.
