The US threatens Britain with withdrawing support over the Malvina Islands

An internal Pentagon email, leaked in recent hours, confirms that the Donald Trump administration is considering withdrawing diplomatic support for British sovereignty over the islands, given Keir Starmer's refusal to join his war against Iran.

If the US adopts a neutral stance or one favorable to the Argentine claim, the diplomatic scenario of the islands would change forever.

The reason is purely transactional : British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has refused to fully commit UK military assets to the all-out offensive Trump is leading against Iran. For the White House, London's refusal to allow unrestricted use of bases like Diego Garcia is a betrayal.

True to his "hammer diplomacy" style, Trump has ordered a review of the status of what the Pentagon now calls "European imperial possessions." By questioning the sovereignty of the Malvina Islands, Washington not only strikes at British national pride but also further fractures the backbone of NATO.

A pattern of global threats

This maneuver should come as no surprise. We are dealing with a president who has made territorial threats his primary negotiating tool: against Mexico and Canada, with tariffs and border closures for security reasons; against Spain, by threatening its suspension from NATO for not aligning itself in the Middle East; against Greenland, by recalling his long-standing intention to purchase it as a strategic asset; and against the United Kingdom, by comparing Starmer to Neville Chamberlain and dismissing its aircraft carriers as "toys."

The opportunity (and the risk) for Argentina

While London responds with indignation, asserting that its sovereignty is "non-negotiable," the atmosphere in Argentina is one of anticipation. The close relationship between Javier Milei and Trump has positioned Argentina as a reliable ally in the Southern Cone. Should the US adopt a neutral stance or one favorable to Argentina's claim, the diplomatic landscape surrounding the islands would be forever altered.

However, analysts warn: what Trump gives as a reward today, he may take away tomorrow as punishment . In this new world order, borders and historical rights seem to have become mere entries in the margin of a military ledger.

Washington's message is clear: Either you're with us on the front lines, or your territories will lose the protection of the American eagle.

This Pentagon leak, which has circulated in international media such as The Telegraph and Reuters, is not limited exclusively to the Malvina Islands, but frames the threat within a broader review of what the Trump administration calls "European imperial possessions."

Although the Malvina Islands are the central focus due to their historical significance and current tensions with Keir Starmer's government, the information gathered indicates the following regarding other territories:

·         Diego Garcia (British Indian Ocean Territory): This is the most critical point of technical friction. London's refusal to allow the US to use this base to launch direct offensive attacks against Iran is what triggered the retaliation. The document suggests that the US could withdraw its support for British sovereignty there in the face of international claims (such as those from Mauritius).

·         Gibraltar: Although not with the same intensity as the Malvinas, the report mentions a review of support for British overseas jurisdictions in Europe, as a way of putting pressure on the United Kingdom as a whole.

·         Cyprus (Sovereign Bases): It is mentioned tangentially in relation to British intelligence capabilities and bases in the Mediterranean, suggesting that "no allied territorial asset is guaranteed" without reciprocal military cooperation.

·         Other nations (Spain): The report is particularly aggressive in proposing even the suspension of Spain from NATO due to its critical stance on military operations in the Middle East, demonstrating that Trump's threat seeks to punish any "lack of loyalty" in the European bloc.
