The Head of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Nation reported on the works for the construction of the new Integrated Naval Base of the Argentine Navy in the city of Ushuaia , province of Tierra del Fuego; where he denied the participation of the United States in the construction, contrary to what President Javier Milei himself had announced on April 4 during a meeting with diplomatic authorities and the Chief of the US Southern Command, General Laura Richadson .
The details about the works for the new base, although they were not many, were provided within the framework of the exhibition before the Chamber of Senators of Congress in report No. 139.
The head of the national area, Nicolás Posse, explained that the tasks are carried out “on the property belonging to the national state under the administration of the Argentine Navy, within the jurisdiction of the Ushuaia Naval Base, where the Naval Air Station is also located. Ushuaia (former airport of the City)”.
“As of December 31, 2023, the Integrated Naval Base of the Argentine Navy was at 9.13% physical progress and 2.5 billion pesos in financial execution,” the official said, adding that “to date the soil movement tasks and construction of the platform of one of the two warehouses.”
Likewise, Posse denied the participation of the United States in the construction of these facilities, despite the fact that the Argentine president himself had announced this in a sudden meeting with General Richardson during the night of April 4, in the gymnasium of the Ushuaia Naval Base.
“The Ministry of Defense reports that it has not participated in the drafting or negotiation of a bilateral agreement or Memorandum of Understanding with the United States for the Integrated Naval Base in Ushuaia,” Posse stated. To date, there is no agreement or agreement that determines the entry of foreign troops, nor permanent establishment in national territory.”
In this sense, he added that "the purpose of providing logistical services (dock, warehouses, etc.) to the Navy units based in Ushuaia, of the Navy under operational control of the Joint Antarctic Command of the EMCO during the Antarctic Campaign and the eventual assistance to foreign ships that require it.”
