As we reported in March , just a few kilometers from the city of Ushuaia, Argentine soldiers and U.S. Marines conducted a joint exercise . This event, seemingly a simple training activity, conceals a political decision that cannot be ignored. Javier Milei's government has opened the door to the military presence of Great Britain's main ally, putting the sovereignty of one of our nation's most sensitive areas at risk .
The reason this is so serious lies in history . Long before the 1982 conflict, US intervention in the region had already directly impacted Argentine sovereignty. In 1831, a US Navy corvette, the USS Lexington, attacked and shelled Puerto Soledad in the Malvina Islands . This act of aggression, which destroyed the Argentine population there and arrested its authorities, weakened our presence in the archipelago. Just two years later, in 1833 , this attack facilitated the subsequent usurpation of the islands by the United Kingdom. In other words, long before the 1982 war, the United States had already acted against Argentine sovereignty in the Malvinas .
Adding to this history is the fact that the United States and Great Britain are inseparable military, political, and economic partners. They belong to NATO , the most powerful military pact in the world. This alliance is no small matter for Argentines. During the Malvinas War in In 1982, the Ronald Reagan administration, despite its supposed neutrality, provided Britain with crucial satellite information, weapons, logistics, and technological support that was decisive for the outcome of the conflict.
Allowing the military forces of that same country, which aided our invader in the past, to set foot on Tierra del Fuego soil today is more than a grave mistake . We cannot speak of cooperation without considering that the partner in this military training remains the main strategic supporter of the country that took the Malvinas from us . This decision amounts to a silent surrender, a gesture of submission that weakens our historic cause.
The government has defended these exercises by saying they serve to improve the capabilities of our forces. But this justification is merely an excuse that hides a much deeper problem. The reality is that a foreign actor, with a history of supporting our colonizers, is being allowed to enter a space that should be the exclusive domain of our defense forces.
This event is proof of a new foreign policy. Milei's government has chosen to subordinate national interests to an unconditional alliance with Washington . This not only affects our ability to be an autonomous nation, but also shows disrespect for those who fought for our sovereignty.
Argentine history is steeped in struggles for independence and the defense of our territory. Engaging in such close cooperation with a country that supports our historical colonizers goes against the very essence of our identity.
