The Vice President categorically rejects Milei's agreement with Great Britain

Victoria Villarruel confronts the President of the Nation again and denounces that the agreement is contrary to the interests of the Nation, that it allows the British to continue plundering our seas and that the only thing that Argentines get is “to go visit our islands with a visa and passport.”

"Are they taking us for fools? They are gaining material, concrete and immediate advantages, while they are offering us crumbs as emotional consolation and weakening our ability to negotiate," said the Argentine vice president.

" Vice President Victoria Villarruel opposes the new diplomatic agreement reached by the Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino, with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, David Lammy, in relation to the Malvinas Question , which renews the objectives of the Foradori-Duncan Agreement reached during the government of Mauricio Macri , totally beneficial for the British and detrimental to the Argentine Republic.

“The proposed agreement announced with the United Kingdom is contrary to the interests of our Nation. It proposes to provide continental logistical support to the occupation and allow them to continue plundering our seas. For what purpose? To visit our islands with a visa and passport? Do they take us for fools? They obtain material, concrete and immediate advantages, while they offer us crumbs as emotional consolation and weaken our possibility of negotiation,” wrote this afternoon minutes after 5 p.m. the Vice President of the Nation and daughter of a War Veteran, on her X account.

Everyone knows what Malvinas represents for me and that is my limit and forces me to speak out.

Specifically, Victoria Villarruel argues that “it is unusual that while the US offers us coast guard vessels to protect our Argentine sea from extracontinental pillage, we propose to cooperate with the power that usurps our territory.”

And taking a further step in the matter of increasingly deep differences with the decisions made by President Javier Milei through his ministers, the Head of the National Senate expressed: “These are not words against our Government, however, it is inevitable to express my opinion on this agreement, since it is an issue that touches every fiber of my identity and puts at stake the permanent interests of our great Nation. Because we are friends of everyone, but first of all of the Homeland.”

The agreement that Victoria Villarruel rejects was materialized last Tuesday during Diana Mondino 's trip to New York City, within the framework of the UN General Assembly, where the foreign minister met with David Lammy . After the meeting, the Foreign Ministry issued a statement in which it outlined the main points agreed upon.

The Mondino-Lammy Agreement

Tuesday 24 September 2024

Press Release No.: 470/24

Within the framework of a renewed stage of the bilateral relationship, characterized by dialogue and the building of trust, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of the Argentine Republic, Diana Mondino, and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Lammy, met in New York on September 24 and advanced a broad agenda of issues that include different aspects related to the South Atlantic. The safeguarding formula of sovereignty contained in paragraph 2 of the Joint Declaration of October 19, 1989 will be applied to this agenda and its results.

The Parties have agreed to resume negotiations aimed at finalizing the third phase of the Humanitarian Project Plan jointly with the International Red Cross, as well as to organize a trip for the families of fallen soldiers to the Islands before the end of 2024, so that they can visit the graves of the soldiers who rest there.

The need to move forward with concrete measures on fisheries conservation and in favour of better connectivity was also established, based on the arrangements reached in 2018, including the resumption of the weekly flight from San Pablo to the Islands, which made a monthly stopover in Córdoba.

These measures will allow progress to be made on a more ambitious agenda of cooperation in different areas and under a sovereign formula, aimed at promoting human and economic development and strengthening ties between the Islands and the continent.

Foreign Secretary Mondino and Secretary Lammy welcomed the steps being taken to achieve a better bilateral relationship and agreed to speak again at a future opportunity.
