The Chilean state-owned company Asmar (Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada) announced that it plans to begin construction of the first frigate for the Chilean Navy in 2032 .
In an ambitious project that seeks to strengthen the country's naval capacity and promote the local shipbuilding industry, Rear Admiral José Miguel Hernández , director of Asmar , stressed that this is a long-term plan .
Asmar will be responsible for the detailed engineering and construction of the frigate , but will also require the collaboration of associated companies for the integration of necessary systems.
Asmar is currently working on the construction of a multipurpose vessel , the first of a total of four planned units , in order to ensure self-sufficiency in the manufacture of warships .
At the same time, Hernández announced that construction of the first frigate of the Chilean Navy is expected to begin in 2032 , in order not only to strengthen the country's naval capacity, but also to boost the national shipbuilding industry .
During his participation in the international congress “The Challenges of the Defense Industry in the New International Order”, held on December 4 at the “XIII International Naval and Maritime Exhibition and Conference for Latin America, Exponaval 2024” , Hernández highlighted the importance of Asmar to articulate both public and private companies in the new naval construction policy.
“ It is our hope to be able to build warships for the Chilean Navy in the next decade ,” said Hernández , adding that “ we will work on detailed engineering and subsequent construction, ensuring that the design is robust and adaptable to our operational needs .”
