UNR students reject the British competition on the Malvinas

The project seeks to have the university take an institutional stance in defense of Argentine sovereignty over the archipelago. They consider the competition an attempt to legitimize the occupation of the islands.

The initiative arose from the student group Febo Asoma.

Students from the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations at the National University of Rosario (UNR) have submitted a proposal to the Board of Trustees to express their opposition to the "Getting to Know My Neighbors in the Malvina Islands" contest . The initiative, promoted by the British embassy in several countries in the region, offers an all-expenses-paid trip to the islands to one winner, who must share their experience on social media.

The student group Febo Asoma describes the contest as a "political maneuver" that seeks to weaken Argentina's legitimate claim to sovereignty over the Malvina Islands and legitimize British colonialism in the South Atlantic.

Sovereignty as State Policy

In the project's rationale, the students argue that the Malvinas Cause is a state policy that transcends individual governments, and therefore, public institutions have a responsibility to defend historical memory and sovereignty.

The text proposes that the faculty issue an institutional statement of repudiation and ratify Argentina's sovereign right over the Malvina Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands, and the corresponding maritime areas. It also requests that the UNR refrain from endorsing any initiative that validates such competitions. The proposal will be submitted to the university's Superior Council for a similar statement and to join the position of other national universities that have already expressed their opposition to the competition.
