According to information published by Escenario Mundial , on December 17, the illegal government of the Malvinas Islands, backed by the United Kingdom, approved the creation of the Maritime Committee, a government body that will focus on managing maritime issues. It is expected that it will position itself as a “forum for debate” on issues in the maritime sector, such as communication lines, fishing operations, hydrocarbon exploitation, among others.
The illegitimate Malvinas government currently has multiple such committees, including the Fisheries Advisory Committee. However, while they cover parts of the sector, they did not exist until now. a body capable of covering the entire spectrum of maritime activity in the Islands and their surrounding areas.
Following the sector's approval of the creation of the Committee, it will become active and will advise the Executive to "support the safety of seafarers, ships and the sustainability of the marine environment."
In the words of the illicit Director of the Malvinas Maritime Authority, Chris Moorey , “the people of these islands know only too well how fundamentally dependent we are on the sea and how important the maritime sector is to the well-being of our community. I am therefore pleased that the creation of the Committee has been approved.”
It is worth noting that the maritime sector is one of the most important for the region, but also for the economy of the islands. However, last June, it was confirmed that the Sea Lion deposit - discovered in 2010 by the British company Rockhopper - is much larger than expected, giving the Islands a possible new source of income.
Although hydrocarbon extraction can be a long process over time, mainly due to the need to establish a plausible exploration and exploitation area, it is an industry that undoubtedly provides exponential profits. Currently, according to a report by Rockhopper Exploration , it is expected to extract 532 million barrels of oil compared to the 312 million previously announced.
