Milei would negotiate the recovery of the Malvina Islands in exchange for a US base on the islands themselves.

In Argentina, "it would be sold as the recovery of sovereignty," Verbitsky noted.

The journalist, writer, and researcher Horacio Verbitsky revealed a plan being developed within Javier Milei 's administration to reclaim the Malvina Islands . This initiative is allegedly directly linked to the geostrategic interests of the United States under Donald Trump . The information, presented on air during his editorial on " El Cohete a la Luna" on Radio Cut this past Sunday, November 2, 2025, was conspicuously omitted from the written text of the column, but can be heard starting at minute 48 of the program recording.

In a conversation with journalists Marcelo Figueras and Josefina Bolis , Verbitsky introduced a "speculation" that, while he doesn't know "the exact details," he is certain "existed" and has been "discussed" in government circles. This possibility, the journalist presented, falls within the context of Argentina's deepening alignment with Washington's interests, which revolve around a far-reaching regional strategy.

According to his version, the key lies in the White House's geopolitical desires, because, as Verbitsky stated, "the United States also wants to control, and has expressed this, the bi-oceanic passage through the Strait of Magellan, thereby controlling its Antarctic projection, and establishing a naval base." The crux of the matter lies in the location of this military infrastructure. The "speculation," according to Verbitsky , suggests that "the US naval base might not be in Ushuaia, but rather in Puerto Argentino, in the Malvina Islands."

The journalist detailed the alleged mechanism of this diplomatic and military move, conceiving it as a highly sensitive sovereignty exchange: "And this would be sold here as the recovery of sovereignty, because it would come with a transfer of sovereignty from the islands of Great Britain to Argentina. And once the lost little sister is recovered, the American base would be installed there." In the same exchange, his colleague Marcelo Figueras pointed out that this scheme would demonstrate "how the Americans would displace the British in that case without any problem," to which Verbitsky agreed, confirming that "That's the idea."

Verbitsky framed this information within the turbulent Argentine political context, which he described in his editorial as a time when Milei's government is acting in accordance with the demands of the IMF and, especially, the US government , which the president is determined to please without reservation. In fact, the editorial emphasizes that, for Washington, "the main objective was then, and is now, to chain Argentine politics and economics to the interests and needs of the United States, regardless of who is in power."

Thus, the potential "recovery" of the Malvina Islands would not primarily be an exercise of full sovereignty, but rather a restructuring of the military presence in the South Atlantic and Antarctica, which would cede the archipelago's strategic position to US power . While the journalist clarified that "there hasn't been any advanced negotiation, (...) it's one of the issues on the table," he concluded by reflecting that, from the outside, "we see shadows, but we don't see exactly everything that's happening."

This analysis puts into perspective that the Malvinas/Malvinas issue could be being used as a bargaining chip within the deep geopolitical alignment of the Argentine government with the Trumpist Republican faction of the United States.

Horacio Verbitsky quotes : …in addition, the United States wants to control, and has expressed this, the bi-oceanic passage through the Strait of Magellan, thus the Antarctic Projection, and a naval base.

There has even been speculation—I don't know the exact details, but I know it existed—that the US naval base might not be in Ushuaia, but in Puerto Argentino, in the Malvina Islands. And this would be presented here as the recovery of sovereignty, because it would be accompanied by a transfer of sovereignty of the islands from Great Britain to Argentina. And once the lost little sister island is recovered, the US base would be established there. This has been discussed; there haven't been any advanced negotiations yet, but it's one of the issues on the table.

Verbitsky: The Informant

Horacio Verbitsky is one of the Argentine journalists and writers with the most extensive sources of information, a fact he has demonstrated throughout his long and controversial career. In his early career, he worked alongside figures such as Rodolfo Walsh , as part of the press team for the Montoneros armed political organization (1973-1977).

Since 1975, he has published more than twenty books, including key works on political and military topics such as Double Game: Catholic and Military Argentina .

In the field of human rights , he presided over the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) for two decades and served on the board of directors of the Latin American division of Human Rights Watch . He was a columnist for the newspaper Página/12 for thirty years, and since 2017 he has directed the website El Cohete a la Luna .

Among other things, he has received public accusations of having collaborated with the Air Force during the last military dictatorship, being labeled a "double agent" in books such as Gabriel Levinas 's, accusations that Verbitsky has categorically denied.
