From February 19 to 21 , the province of Tierra del Fuego will be the setting for the international event “ Territories of the Future ”, which will bring together leading experts , academics , authorities and businessmen from several countries to address crucial issues regarding the protection of the environment and natural resources in the South Atlantic and Antarctica .
In a context marked by the urgency of facing climate change and promoting sustainable development , this meeting is presented as a platform to discuss the critical role of territories in global climate balance .
Against the backdrop of devastating fires in Argentine Patagonia and the difficulties in containing these disasters , the event takes on greater relevance . The current situation has put the country's environmental agenda in jeopardy, especially in the province of Chubut .
Added to this is the ongoing attack from the highest national and international political leadership , taking into account the dependence on funding for effective prevention and research policies on climate change and environmental protection.
In this context, “ Territories of the Future ” seeks to be a call to action . The event, which will include the active participation of the University Network for the Care of the Common Home (RUC) , calls for strengthening the importance of the Argentine scientific and technological system , in particular the role of CONICET and its researchers.
The meeting will provide an opportunity to highlight the role of the scientific community in defending the rights of Argentina and Latin America in the context of Antarctica , an issue that is of particular relevance in global debates .
Around 25 university rectors from Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala and other countries in the region are expected to attend the meeting. Their presence underlines the need for international collaboration in protecting these vulnerable areas and the importance of integrating diverse voices in the debate on the future of the planet .
“ Territories of the Future ” is projected as a significant milestone in the political and environmental agenda of Tierra del Fuego , creating a network of collaboration between local institutions, such as the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF) and the Southern Center for Scientific Research (CADIC) , and a series of representatives from different universities in the region .
