In the vast territories north of the Río Grande , where Antarctic winds reach speeds of up to 120 km/h , a new chapter in Argentina's energy history is being written.
TotalEnergies , together with its partners Wintershall DEA and Pan American Energy , has begun the final installation phase of what will be the southernmost wind farm on the planet , a project that seeks to combine technological innovation , environmental care and local development .
The two wind turbines that will soon dominate the Tierra del Fuego landscape reach 86 meters at the hub , with blades measuring 136 meters in diameter . These giants have been specially adapted to withstand the region's extreme weather conditions .
Each one has a generating capacity of 9 MW , adding up to an estimated annual total of 48,000 MWh , enough to supply the equivalent of 12,000 homes and cover approximately 15% of the provincial electricity demand .
The project, which represents a predominantly international investment ( 60% from TotalEnergies , 25% from Wintershall DEA and 15% from Pan American Energy ), will not only provide clean energy but will also release an additional 22 million m³ of gas annually for the domestic market.
This will be achieved by reducing by 55% the emissions linked to the electricity generation required for the operation of the Río Cullen and Cañadón Alfa treatment plants , which currently depend on gas turbines .
"We are very proud of the progress made at the world's southernmost wind farm," said Catherine Remy , Country Chair of TotalEnergies in Argentina . She emphasized that this project is part of the company's global strategy to reduce its emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 2015 levels.
A key aspect of the project has been the training of local workers . Through joint programs with the UTN and Industrial School No. 1 , 120 Tierra del Fuego technicians have been trained, representing 70% of the 170 workers employed in the construction project.
During the presentation ceremony, Governor Gustavo Melella stated that "for us, this is a day of joy because it marks the beginning of the energy transition that is so important in our province."
The president emphasized that this is just the first step in a broader vision that includes future connection to the National Interconnected System and the development of green hydrogen projects.
From an environmental perspective, the park incorporates cutting-edge technology to minimize its impact. Infrared sensors and thermal cameras constantly monitor avian activity , while the turbines' non-reflective paint reduces their visibility to birds. These measures are particularly important in a migration zone for Patagonian species .
Its strategic location near the Río Cullen plant , 130 km north of Río Grande , takes full advantage of the region's constant winds while contributing to diversifying the Tierra del Fuego energy matrix .
