The Government of Tierra del Fuego AeIAS, through the Secretariat of Justice and the Secretariat of Human Rights and Diversity , has decided to implement a measure that will enable the inclusion of the indigenous identity in the birth certificates issued by the Civil Registry of the province. .
The document was delivered to representatives of indigenous peoples during the October 11 march in Ushuaia in the presence of the Secretary of Justice, Gonzalo Carrillo and the Undersecretary of Indigenous Peoples, Pamela Altamirando .
The resolution for the incorporation of indigenous identity in birth certificates is based on a solid commitment of the Fuegian State to human rights and cultural diversity, emphasizing the constitutional recognition of the ethnic and cultural pre-existence of Argentine indigenous peoples ( article 75, paragraph 17 of the National Constitution ).
In addition, the commitment to international treaties is highlighted, such as the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, National Law 26,994 and Provincial Law 235 , which underline the obligation of the Provincial State to strengthen indigenous identities.
In this regard, Carrillo assured that "this initiative represents an act of recognition, strengthening of cultural diversity and a historic reparatory action for a sector of the population that has been marginalized and discriminated against for a long time."
Based on this new regulation, any person born in the province can be registered or request that their indigenous identity be registered on their birth certificate.
