On Wednesday, April 8, before Committee No. 2 of the Tierra del Fuego legislature, the State Prosecutor, Virgilio Martínez de Sucre , exposed to the parliamentarians the web of lies and omissions with which Roberto Murcia facilitated the national intervention in the Port of Ushuaia. Today, Sunday, May 10, 32 days after that official revelation: Why does Murcia remain in his position?
In any state with a healthy democracy, an official who admits to the highest oversight body and to the Legislative Branch that he "may have been wrong" in not consulting the State Prosecutor about a federal intervention , should have submitted his resignation immediately after leaving the building.
Murcia didn't just "make a mistake." According to Prosecutor Martínez de Sucre , he was explicitly advised on December 16th to file an urgent injunction to stop the ANPyN's takeover. Legislators know that Murcia ignored the Prosecutor's advice , concealed information, and allowed the port to be handed over "turnkey" at 11:59 PM on January 20th.
The Enigma of the Legislature
It is striking that the legislators present —who saw Murcia "visibly affected and speechless" upon being caught in his lie— have not issued a single resolution to date exposing the revelations of the State Prosecutor and demanding the removal of the entire leadership of the Provincial Directorate of Ports of Tierra del Fuego.
Did the Legislature contact Governor Gustavo Melella to inform him of what happened and ask for explanations? If the people's representatives allow an official to lie in committee and continue managing (even if only formally) the province's most strategic asset, they are sending a message of impunity.
Who does Melella govern for?
Ultimate responsibility lies with the Governor. If Melella has neither removed Murcia from his post nor ordered an internal investigation, he is confirming that the actions of the DPP president were, in reality, an order carried out. Keeping Murcia in his position is tantamount to maintaining the "liberated zone" plan.
The Port of Ushuaia now collects revenue for the national Ports Administration (AGP) . The "key to the province" was handed over by an official who lied and by a political system that now chooses to remain silent. Roberto Murcia's continued presence is a monument to the neglect of Tierra del Fuego . If there is no resignation, no investigation, and no legislative action, it is because in Tierra del Fuego sovereignty is proclaimed in public pronouncements but surrendered behind closed doors.
