After almost four days of sailing, the sailboat " Caoba " arrived at Puerto Argentino in the Malvina Islands last Friday at noon.
The boat had set out from Caleta Hornos , on the coast of Chubut , on a journey to pay tribute to a history that dates back more than five centuries and which leads to Argentine sovereignty over the archipelagos of the South Atlantic . In addition, a former combatant from the 1982 war is taking part in the journey .
The " Caoba " traveled 590 miles at an average speed of over 6 knots , facing a rough sea with winds that at times exceeded 45 knots (85 km/h) . A challenge that proved exhausting for its three crew members: Captain Sigfrido Nielsen , ex-combatant Alejandro Diego and the experienced Pablo Leoni .
However, the expectation of landing on the islands encouraged the team to continue forward, facing the cold and the showers . Despite the difficulties, there were moments of enjoyment , such as the night when the full moon illuminated the ocean .
The arrival of the " Caoba " to the Malvina Islands coincides with a rich history of exploration and evokes tales of navigators such as Amerigo Vespucci , who, in April 1502 , documented the difficult maritime conditions they encountered on their route.
Over the next few weeks , the sailboat will witness a deep connection with history , as Alejandro Diego will relive the tragic episodes of the Malvinas War , which he took part in 43 years ago.
In turn, Captain Nielsen will add another exceptional page to the sailboat's log , transcending mere geographical coordinates and turning this journey into an act of memory and reflection .
