Mobilized by the lack of institutional response, both from the government of Tierra del Fuego and the national government, to explain how it was allowed and who is responsible for the assembly and enabling of a radar in the capitals of Ireland and England on Fuegian soil; the War Veterans Center of Río Grande together with its counterpart in Ushuaia, and accompanied by about 70 residents of the three urban centers of the Big Island; They held an event at km 2946 of National Route No. 3, in front of the entrance to Estancia El Relincho, where the LEOLABS company devices are installed.
There were two speakers, the president of the Río Grande War Veterans Center, Raúl Villafañe, and the president of the Ushuaia Ex-Combatants Center, Conrado Zamora . A resident of the Malvinas Argentinas neighborhood of Río Grande also spoke.
Raúl Villafañe thanked the Fuegians for their support, and especially the Ushuaia Ex-Combatants Center, for having moved to that distant place to demonstrate in defense of Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands and against British interference; and once again demanded institutional responses about the inexplicable existence of the radar “installed in total ignorance of Fuegian society.”
The veteran's feeling was expressed sadly, in the interpretation of being part of those who in 1982 went to war in defense of sovereignty and who for 40 years have continued to malvinize, as if to feel that now with these unclear actions and contrary to the national interests, “they are coming to demalvinize us.”
For his part, Conrado Zamora ruled out that the presence of the Veterans in the place has to do with partisan political intentions or is framed in the electoral process underway, but only with the need to obtain clear and forceful responses from those who govern; highlighting the importance of the unity of the centers on an issue of maximum relevance.
Among those present were members of the leadership of the Unified Union of Fuegian Education Workers, SUTEF ; from FIPCA , the Interactive Foundation to Promote Water Culture, which has led the mobilizations to Lago Escondido appropriated by Joe Lewis ; few political references and a large group of residents from Río Grande, Ushuaia and Tolhuin who gathered despite the distance and the cold.
Flags with sovereign slogans were hung and the verses of the Argentine National Anthem and the Malvinas March were sung.
In dialogue with journalist Daniel Puebla from FM Aire Libre , Conrado Zamora, declared: “we are in a peaceful demonstration, they put something in our house in Tierra del Fuego that is visible and we don't know what function it serves.”
"We don't have information at the national level, nothing. Neither do our politicians. Not even at the provincial level, much less at the local level, taking into account that this is within the urban axis and it is important to at least express that it has not done so yet" , broad.
Meanwhile, through the same medium, Raúl Villafañe , pointed out “we have no information about anything. So, if the information comes from the government, well, one believes and says, well, it's true, as has happened in Río Grande, they have put a radar and we have talked with the governor, the radar is ours, it monitors the ground, the air, the planes, so, well, we believe in what they tell us.But here we have nothing.
