In the midst of a profound international estrangement that Argentina is suffering due to the irresponsible and disrespectful foreign policy of the Javier Milei government, which is eroding the historical support at the global level and especially among the members of the United Nations Decolonization Committee on the Malvinas Question ; the representative of Tierra del Fuego to the Mercosur Parliament, Alejandro Deanes ; will ask the members of the multilateral organization for their support to go as a block as a Region; before the International Criminal Court and in protest, against the militarization of the Islands, and the refusal of the United Kingdom to resume the diplomatic dialogue demanded by the General Assembly of the United Nations through Resolution No. 2065/XX , and which Great Britain interrupted after the war of 1982. It will do so one day before the 196th anniversary of the creation of the Political and Military Command of Malvinas , a date on which our Nation commemorates the Day of the Affirmation of Argentine Rights over the Malvinas Islands, the South Atlantic Islands and the Antarctic Sector .
"What I'm aiming for is for the issue to reach a regional level. That's what I'm looking for," said Alejandro Deanes , a Tierra del Fuego native and the Argentine parliamentarian in Mercosur for Unión Por la Patria, optimistically in a brief conversation with this outlet.
"I will ask that we approve a resolution instructing Mercosur to take concrete measures to address this situation. That all available diplomatic and legal mechanisms be used to demand the demilitarization of the region and the return of the Malvinas Islands to Argentina. That a clear and forceful message be sent to the international community that our region will not tolerate the insecurity and instability generated by the presence of this naval base and the usurpation of the Malvinas Islands," he stated.
Deanes' legal and political arguments will be enriched through the presentations of three invited specialists that he will bring to this, the 101st Ordinary Session of PARLASUR, chaired by Brazilian Arlindo Chinaglia . They will be: Juan Augusto Rattenbach, lawyer and master in applied economics, advisor to the Malvinas and South Atlantic Islands Museum and grandson of the prestigious Lieutenant General Benjamín Rattenbach. The military man who headed the Commission for the Analysis and Evaluation of Political and Strategic Military Responsibilities in the South Atlantic Conflict, whose final report was prepared under military secrecy between December 2, 1982, and September 16, 1983. A report that went far beyond what the Junta had imagined, which is why the concealment of the 13 existing copies was ordered.
Also speaking will be Dr. Ernesto Adrián Loffler , a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Tierra del Fuego; a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), with a PhD in Law from the Universidad Austral, a Master's degree in Law and Judicial Magistracy from the Universidad Austral, and a specialist in Constitutional Law from the University of Salamanca; among many other academic degrees and studies; and a former National Deputy and member of the Latin American Parliament.
Joining them will be Aldo Leiva , the National Representative for the province of Chaco and a former Malvinas combatant. A fervent defender of Argentina's sovereign rights over the Malvinas Islands, the South Atlantic, and the Antarctic territory, he has voiced the demands and forcefully opposed the de-Malvinas policy embodied by the Libertad Avanza government under the presidential figure of Javier Gerardo Milei, who openly declares himself an admirer of Margaret Thatcher.
A defense by three specialists , who from different perspectives will seek to contribute elements for a collective reflection on sovereignty in the South Atlantic and the bloc's strategic projection in that region.
During the day, initiatives to strengthen institutional cooperation, sustainable development, and regional integration will be discussed. Specifically, the 3rd Special Session entitled "Current Status of the Malvinas Question and its Implications for the Strategic Position of MERCOSUR in the South Atlantic" will take place between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.
The session will take place this Monday, June 9, at the brand-new headquarters of the MERCOSUR Parliament, inaugurated at the end of last year, in Montevideo.

In the environmental sphere, the proposal to create the Fund for the Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Great American Chaco will be presented. This initiative, promoted by parliamentarians from the bloc as a response to the ecological and social challenges of this shared ecosystem, will also be considered. A Procedural Agreement between PARLASUR and the Plurinational Electoral Body of Bolivia will be considered in the context of the 2025 general elections, as part of the work carried out by the MERCOSUR Parliamentary Democracy Observatory (ODPM).
