Petri omitted to speak about the Malvinas Question at the closing of the Summit of Ministers of Defense

As host of the most important multilateral defense forum in the hemisphere held in Mendoza, the Argentine minister omitted to refer to the Malvinas Question, although he ratified Milei's support for the "legitimate defense" of Israel and highlighted the "courage" of Ukraine.

"It was omitted because it was not on the agenda," said the Argentine Ministry of Defense.

As we reported in Agenda Malvinas last Monday, the XVI Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas was held in Mendoza under the watchful supervision of Laura Richardson , head of the United States Southern Command . At the conference, the Argentine government declared its condemnation of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine and expressed its support for Israel, but omitted to mention the Malvinas Question .

According to the newspaper Perfil, the Malvinas "are not discussed." This was the explanation given by the Ministry of Defense, after Petri "closed the conference with a statement that emphasized the principle of territorial integrity but omitted the mention of Argentina's claim to sovereignty over the South Atlantic archipelago."

"The issue was not mentioned so as not to place a bilateral issue in a multilateral context, in which the conference has no specific competence ," sources close to the minister told the newspaper Perfil.

According to the official statement, Petri referred to Argentina's strongest argument in international public law to recover the archipelago through diplomatic means. "Argentina has been and will continue to be a firm defender of territorial integrity, a fundamental principle that will always guide our actions," he said. However, there was one detail that did not go unnoticed, Perfil noted: "the omission of the Malvinas Question, which also implies the claim for sovereignty of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands."

Sources from the Ministry of Defense explained to the newspaper that "they did not mention the claim that marked the Argentine diplomatic tradition given that Minister Petri limited himself to giving conclusions about what he shared during the 11 meetings he held with representatives of other countries."

"It was omitted because it was not on the agenda. The defined agenda was climate challenges and Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, he emphasized territorial integrity and the defense of sovereignty ," clarified the ministry headed by Petri.

"Since the 2014 Summit held in Arequipa (Peru) until today, the Malvinas issue has not been included in the final Declarations of this forum. This lack of inclusion has continued despite the changes in administration that have occurred in Argentina ," added the aforementioned sources.

The Malvinas Question , as established by our National Constitution in the first of its Transitional Provisions, establishes that: “The Argentine Nation ratifies its legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the corresponding maritime and insular spaces, as they are an integral part of the national territory.

The recovery of these territories and the full exercise of sovereignty, respecting the way of life of their inhabitants, and in accordance with the principles of international law, constitute a permanent and inalienable objective of the Argentine people."

But, as we have been observing, the Malvinas Question is an issue that makes the Foreign Ministry and the government of Javier Milei uncomfortable since their policy seeks to subordinate Argentina to the interests of the Anglo-Yankee Zionist alliance that heads the Western Axis, composed of the United States , the United Kingdom and Israel .  Although the Malvinas Question should be addressed by various areas of the Government, as established by our Constitution, we have seen in the ten months of Milei 's government that there is a recurring omission to speak about the subject as it should be done. Likewise, they omitted the inclusion of the Malvinas Islands on a map in a meeting organized by the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs of the Cabinet Office to promote the advantages of the RIGI in an official act in the Casa Rosada. Not to mention the name "Malvinas", as the British usurper calls them, in the announcement made days ago by the Foreign Ministry led by Mondino when reporting on the progress of the third phase of the Humanitarian Project Plan, aimed at identifying Argentine ex-combatants in Malvinas .

This claim is a State policy that Argentina must implement in all international forums every time it participates, which undoubtedly also includes the summit of defense ministers.

"None of the thirty-four countries that make up this Conference are unaware of the current situation in the South Atlantic, nor of our efforts to claim our sovereignty, specifically over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the corresponding maritime and island spaces ," Perfil highlighted. These words were said in 2022 by the then Secretary of International Affairs for Defense, Francisco Cafiero, in his closing speech at the same conference.

Since Javier Milei took office, the Malvinas Question has appeared in the public debate on several occasions, even pitting members of the cabinet against Vice President Victoria Villarruel .
