In a key meeting held this Tuesday, parliamentarians defined the Internal Regulations and a public work plan. With the support of the Veterans of War Centers, the legislative body is preparing to request a series of evidentiary measures directed at various entities to uncover the authorization process for the British radar in Tolhuin.

In this regard, the Special Investigative Commission for the Tolhuin radar project took its first formal step within the Tierra del Fuego Parliament. At a meeting held this Tuesday, June 9, the designated legislators defined the commission's leadership, approved its Internal Regulations, and set June 18 as the date for the second operational meeting, where the first and immediate investigative measures will be carried out.

By unanimous decision of the members of the group, legislator Pablo Villegas (MPF) was appointed to chair the Commission, while parliamentarian Matías Lapadula (PG) will assume the duties of Secretary. Thus, the leadership of the oversight body was structured under the control of blocs that have maintained a firm stance against the continued presence of LeoLabs in the province.

Towards "historical truth" without secret meetings

"The Legislature has the opportunity to create an institutional framework where we can investigate and uncover the truth about what happened with the radar issue ," Villegas told the Legislative Press. The legislator was emphatic in assuring that the Commission's work will be public, allowing any citizen who requests it to participate and present their case, reserving confidentiality only for extremely sensitive cases.

The central objective of the 90 business days that the Commission has —constitutionally based on Chamber Resolutions 131/26 and 161/26— will be to analyze the framework of files and authorizations granted to the firms LeoLabs Inc. and LeoLabs Argentina SRL , in order to know the political, administrative and technical responsibilities of the intervening provincial officials and their possible links with the National Government at that time.

First tests under the Veterans' microscope

The investigation will begin with a strong technical and institutional component. As Villegas himself announced, legislator Juan Carlos Pino (PJ) has already submitted a comprehensive set of evidentiary measures directed at numerous public entities to begin compiling administrative records.

It should be remembered that the Commission has full powers to:

1.   Request certified documentation from the Executive Branch, Judicial Branch, Court of Accounts and State Prosecutor's Office. 

2.   To summon and directly question public officials and employees. 

3.   Summon witnesses and appoint expert witnesses.

All this institutional auditing machinery will be supervised by those who raised their voices the most against the British enclave: a representative from the Malvinas Ex-Combatants Center of Ushuaia and one from the Rio Grande War Veterans Center, who actively participate as ad honorem advisors with the right to speak.

The final report

At the conclusion of the investigation period, the body — also composed of Federico Sciurano , Raúl Von der Thusen , Gisela Dos Santos , Natalia Gracianía and María Laura Colazo — must submit a final report to the Legislative Chamber.

Villegas recalled the gravity of what is at stake on the province's soil: "It is nothing more and nothing less than having a military instrument of the usurping power of our Malvinas Islands."

Should the cross-referencing of data and files reveal any criminal or legal liabilities, the Commission will formally notify the competent authorities. The institutional countdown to break the web of silence is already underway in Tierra del Fuego.
