The Chilean project seeks to establish a submarine cable to Antarctica, improving connectivity for scientific research.

In collaboration with the regional government of Magallanes and the CAF bank , the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications of Chile has initiated an ambitious project that could transform connectivity in Antarctica .

The plan involves launching a feasibility study to establish a submarine cable route connecting Chile to scientific bases in the Antarctic region.

The study will be carried out by experts from Pioneer Consulting and Salience Consulting , and has a budget of 2.2 million dollars.

This analysis will cover a range of areas, from a desktop study and market assessment to political and legal considerations that may influence the project. The research is estimated to take up to 16 months to complete .

Connecting via this submarine cable could significantly improve data access for scientists working in Antarctica . The infrastructure would allow researchers to transmit information more quickly and use cloud- based tools .

Recently, the US National Science Foundation (NSF) also launched an evaluation to build a cable connecting McMurdo Station , the main US Antarctic research center, to New Zealand or Australia . This cable would be intended to provide advanced telecommunications and could include sensors that enable multidisciplinary research .
