Chile competed in the International Shearing Test Match held in the Malvina Islands

Seduced by ties that transcend the economic and become cultural with the colony, Magellanic shearers competed for the first time in the archipelago under British control.

While Chilean diplomacy maintains a formal discourse of support for Argentina, its actions move in the opposite direction.

A highly questionable fact in the rural world of Patagonia has highlighted the growing and controversial link between Chile, our closest neighbor, and the Malvina Islands archipelago.

And although the results are not yet known, for the first time a Chilean team of shearers officially participated yesterday in the The International Test Match of Wool Shearing and Conditioning began yesterday in Puerto Argentino , the pseudo-capital of the territory under British administration.

The news, proudly broadcast by Radio Polar of Punta Arenas, celebrates the recognition of local talent, but raises an alarm about the normalization of a relationship that Argentina considers an affront to its territorial integrity.

The team, made up of Magallanes natives Jorge Cárcamo, Kenneth Macleod, Camila Quinteros and Archie Sepúlveda, competed against Wales, the current world champion, and against the representatives of the implanted colony, which the Chilean media and the organizers cheerfully call "Malvina" (once again).

This event, endorsed by the World Shearing Council , is presented as a milestone for Chilean shearing techniques. However, it transcends the sporting aspect to become a symbol of the deepening of ties that, from an Argentine perspective, are reprehensible.

This rapprochement is not isolated. It is part of a broader economic and logistical strategy, in which Punta Arenas has become the crucial continental bridge for the Islands . The visit of delegations from the Malvina Islands Development Corporation (FIDC) and the existence of a weekly LATAM flight are the flip side of a policy that, in practice, dilutes Chile's explicit support for Argentina's sovereignty claim in international forums.

The paradox is palpable: while Chilean diplomacy maintains a formal discourse of supposed support for Argentina, its national, regional, business, and now sporting actors are advancing a tangible integration with the colony . The presence of a community of around 200 Chileans residing in the islands consolidates this link , creating a social and cultural reality that further complicates the geopolitical landscape.

The participation of the Magallanes sheep shearers —undoubtedly a result of their merit and individual effort— is therefore an event of dual significance . On the one hand, it crowns the technical prestige of workers who have made their way onto the international circuit. On the other hand, however, it irresponsibly serves to veneer normality over a situation that is far from it. Each exchange of this kind reinforces a reality that, from the perspective of Argentina and international law, remains that of an occupied territory .

The growing bilateral relationship between Chile and the British colony that usurped the Argentine islands, which has already transcended trade to delve into cultural and social spheres, represents a real obstacle to a unified position for the continent. Far from the spotlight of high diplomacy, a silent but crucial battle is being waged in the Malvinas over the perception and legitimacy of an occupation that has now lasted 192 years .
